ok so im going to attempt to cover every dream theater song (solos included) on guitar. I will be posting vids of every song, covered completely. I have not learned every song yet and will be going in chronological order, the bad news is I dont have a vid for the first song on the list, A fortune in lies but will be able to upload one hopefully soon. Anyone interested in following? Also forgive me if i make a couple mistakes (john petruccci's work isnt exactly the easiest)
also it wont be officially started until after new years sorry but im spending time with family and am away from my equiptment and recording stuff

Do you seriously have any idea how long this would take?

I think your goal is set way too high, maybe aim for an entire album before you go thinking about an entire discography.  I mean think of songs like ACOS, 8VM, ITNOG, INPOE, TCOT, TDS, Scarred, SDOIT.

How long have you been playing, and I assume you own a 7 string?
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

for about 3 years and im gonna play the seven string parts a higher octave or quickly play it on keyboard when possible. the whole idea is to boost my playing and technique its gonna be a very long process.

To dethklok: Start with the ballads. :) But seriously, octaving everything (if on guitar) is gonna be difficult, just skip those songs for now until you get ahold of a 7string. If you're going chronologically, it's going to be quite difficult. Definitely start with the easier songs first and work your way from there.

On a personal note:
I was thinking about covering JM's bass parts on all songs on the baritone sax. I just checked out IPTOE pt. 1. Struck by how stellar it is and also how notoriously difficult it is because of all the long runs of notes, 8th and 16th note runs on the bass that keep on it for quite a while - insane to do on a wind instrument cuz there's almost no time to breathe then. Ah well. This isn't written for wind instruments, but I might throw up an As I Am cover on the baritone soon enough.. and I needa pick up a soprano so I can play Another Day. Plus, the range of the bass doesn't really match for sax... hehe.

well no seven strings are involved until awake, and yeah i can just really quickly switch to keyboard.

This.

Just a strict cover is pretty boring. Make it your own.

Haha, we'll see whether we actually ever see a single song.

Seriously, I can only chime in with wolfking. You don't stand the slightest chance of playing even remotely that much. This is coming from somebody who can play ~20 Dream Theater songs on guitar from beginning to end including solos; it took an inordinate amount of time to get all that stuff into my mind and under my fingers. And I had the motivation that I was going to perform them live.

Choose some songs you really want to play. Much more fruitful enterprise.

Yep, Rumbo is correct, it just isn't easy.  I remember learning Learning to Live, it took so long.  Seemed like an easier one but it took so much time.  It's not just the fast fretwork, but the chord structures and time signatures.  By the time I moved on and practiced another DT song, I had forgotten half of LTL.  There is just too much going on in the songs, and if you are making mistakes with Wither, just forget it.  Don't set your goals so high because you are heading for failure.  We are not being harsh but just realistic.

I think people don't fully appreciate what this band and others like them pull off every night.  For a band like DT to be as good as they are every night and remembering so many of their songs is incredible, especially when the alter the setlist so much.
