Idea: A DIY Song Roulette

So I kinda tried something like this many many moons ago, but it was in the musicians board and no one goes there so it never got off the ground.

Basically, the idea is to have a song roulette where all the songs submitted are written/recorded by the participants, and the winner is chosen by votes from everyone in general music (well, whoever wants to participate).

Each round would have a theme like the normal roulette, so something like a length restriction or requirement, no vocals, use an odd meter, etc.

I know there are a lot of people here who don't have the best recording setups (I don't have any recording setup actually, so everything I do would be electronic), so the submissions will basically be nothing but demos, even if all you submit is a shitty youtube video, a MIDI file or even just a tuxguitar/guitar pro file, the focus should be on the musical ideas contained, not the production quality. As long as we can tell what's going on, that's awesome.

Ideas/comments/would anyone be interested in participating?

It's a very interesting idea, but I guess that the participants will have to come up with something new for every round, and that could make this project drag on severely.

That said, I'm not against the idea at all, but this has to be taken into account imo.

I'm not even sure it's necessary to make it a long-term competition like a roulette, each round could just be a standalone weekly or biweekly thing.

There was something like this on another forum I go to though it was to see who could make the best song in 60 minutes. That includes from thinking up ideas to finishing the song. There were tons of different themes to go on like space, under water, porno, 70s spy movie, Brad, etc.

Yeah, I really like that idea. Even if we don't do it all the time, having time-limited rounds would be really fun methinks.

Pretty much. I mean you can set up your recording station ahead of time but the minute you start thinking up riffs your clock starts. Obviously it's based on the honor system but it's fun nonetheless.

And Chopped is a sweet show.

Time limit cause it lights a fire under peoples asses. I can imagine given a week by the end you'll still have the same number of contestants with most people doing the whole "uh I was busy" thing.

On one hand, I like the time limit because it keeps you on your toes creativity-wise, and on the other, a week gives participants ample time to fully flesh out their ideas.

That's exactly what I was thinking as well. We're more likely to get submissions if people only have to spend an hour on it rather than fit in time throughout the week.


Right now my instinct is to have primarily time-limited rounds, and than have a free round occasionally, but I want to see what everyone else wants as well.

How is the one hour thing gonna work with the time difference?  Maybe like a day or something would be a better idea.

Every song has to be made in a single one hour session, but we wouldn't make them simultaneously, people can make them whenever they want to.

I think 1 hour is a bit short though, especially if someone is creating electronic music. MIDI files can take a bit longer than that. How about 1 hour 15 mins?

Hey, just to put in my opinion...  I like the whole time limit idea, but I think it should be longer than an hour, just so the person making it has time to allow for corrections or fix all the mistakes for the best results possible.  Maybe closer to two or three?
