Well they said it's been written so it won't be improvised.

AT least not 100% free form.

I'm gonna guess at rough or loose arrangements but recorded totally live several times and letting whatever happens - happen.

Kind of like how Curb Your Enthusiasm has an A and B in a sketch but no dialogue written down and the actors have to get there

themselves.

What could it all mean ?

I had a mad idea that they could record each instrument separately as normal but master each instrument individually for maximum overall audio quality - where nothing is fighting for space - then just mix the three or four mastered instruments that way ?

I dunno - Therapy? recorded an album where they did all drums with no cymbals then went back and overdubbed ONLY cymbals.

This mean that the cymbal track got no compression and cymbals sounded livelier and had way more decay.

Something like that maybe...

Also 3 years is probably the shortest hiatus ever. :lol  - an album this year would still be quicker than most bands who aren't on hiatus.

* Also - didn't realise this but according to Wikipedia - Butch Vig is producing again.  :tup

When Dave Grohl said a while back that it might be a long time until the next album, he was forgetting that good music just sort of happens whenever he's around. He was probably subconsciously writing a new song while making that announcement.

I do legitimately love how quickly they went from 'we're taking a break for a bit' to 'wait, nevermind, we have some ideas for a new album'.  :lol Can't wait to see what they've come up with.

Happy Butch is producing again even though WL was a bit pushed.

I hope it sounds as good as Wasting Light - the production on that is stellar.

So I have stumbled upon a live stream that Foo Fighters are going to be playing in about 5 min. or so.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45-RbBft4aI

I already checked out the band before, Zac Brown Band.  They had played about almost a 90 min. set.  Hopefully, Foo Fighters can play about two hours.  Wheeeeeee.   That would be just awesome.

I don't know where else to put this, but Taylor Hawkins has taken part in a side project called The Birds of Satan.  He sings lead vocals in it.  The band has released an album stream on their site.

https://thebirdsofsatan.com/stream/

On a side note, the opening song is a 9 min. track.

Listening to the first track now. It's pretty interesting so far.
Getting a bit of a 'Them Crooked Vultures' vibe from it.

Also, maybe it's just me, but parts of it feel like at least one of them listened to Cygnus X-1 before writing it.  :lol  Probably not, but it certainly wouldn't be a bad place to get inspiration from.

This mean that the cymbal track got no compression and cymbals sounded livelier and had way more decay.

Tons of bands have used that technique.  Megadeth and QOTSA off the top of my head.

Looking forward to hearing this new one, you can pretty much count on the Foos to have a few decent tracks up their sleeve with each album.

It will be hard to live up to Wasting Light but it will doubtless be a fun experience.

Such a great comeback. I liked Echoes, Silence Patience, Grace - but Wasting Light is easily in their top 3 albums along with the debut and TCATS.

Bumping.  They are the musical guests for Late Show with David Letterman, for a whole week, where they will be performing covers, I think, with various musical guests.  Here was yesterday's video.  They played War Pigs with Zac Brown.

I've always appreciated his style, he's extremely solid and plays so freaking hard.  I suppose it is quite far removed from Ward's jazzy style... fair enough.

On second listen Grohl's vocals are pretty average too haha.  Still, looking forward to the rest of the week's performances.

I saw Letterman last night....glad I did otherwise I would have missed Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters.

Zac Brown who I hadn't heard much of before was great, he sounded much better that Dave but still looking forward to the new release.

I don't think War Pigs was the best cover choice for Dave's voice.  I thought he did well in this cover though.

I would say they're about even, and even give Hawkins an edge. Grohl is really good, but he's not very versatile. He plays loud rock, and that's about it. Hawkins has got more in his arsenal.

Also, I wouldn't call him overrated. He's about where he should be.

I've never seen Hawkins particularly praised as a drummer so I'm not sure where overrated comes from. He's perfect for Foos; he can really rock out but he's also really good at keeping a tight groove. I think he's a lot more interesting than Grohl.

Off topic but......I went on fb today at work and FF announced they're playing The Cubby Bear on friday in Chicago (where I live) and that tickets go on sale at 10 (it was already 11:30). Tickets sold out in about 3 minutes  :lol

For those who don't know, The Cubby Bear is in Wrigleyville where the Cubs play and it's a small club that only holds about 200 people tops.

Pretty crazy that they'd play a tiny club at last minute. But I guess the venue will be featured in the first episode of the HBO series, as it was the place where Grohl saw his first rock show. Thought it was interesting.

Thoughts? It's really different from the rest of Foo, IMO, the structure at least. Will have to listen to it a few other times in order to say yay or nay. But so far  :tup

Were they suppose to rip off the Holy Diver riff?  I'm guessing so cause we all know Dave is a huge Dio fan.

It's an okay song, builds nicely.

So..... is taking a famous part from classic songs and putting it in each new song on the album what Dave was talking about when he said it would be recorded different from any other album in history? Is that why they're doing covers all week on DLS?

Song is ok but I expected more. I have high hopes for the new album still.  :tup

Myeah.  That didn't hit me like Rope did when it came out before Wasting Light.  I dunno if the Dio thing was on purpose but it's kind of a stock riff, I don't think it works very well in this song.
