Travolta
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:22:04 PM »
Since todays NFL games got to be so friggin boring, I deceided to do a Travolta double feature. 2 guilty pleasure movies. Swordfish and Taking of Pelham 123. I know bad movies, but Travolta playing a villian at his best.

To me, Travolta is an eggregious over-actor.  He takes hamming it up to new levels.

Travolta is one of those actors (and I use that term loosely), where, whenever I am watching him on screen, I am very aware I am watching John Travlota. I never see whoever his character is supposed to be, I just see John Travolta. If you are always basically yourself on screen, and you are, say, Cary Grant, that is ok, because you are Cary Grant. If you are John Travolta, it is not.

I know exactly what you mean.  Another like that for me is Will Smith.

Another is Ben Stiller.

I don't wanna see the new Taking of Pelham 123 because the original has Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau.

Jack Black is the worst offender. HE is *exactly* the same person in EVERYTHING.

Travolta was, I thought, excellent in Saturday Night Fever.  He mashed together a nice character study in that film and you've got to give the man credit for some pretty amazing dance moves.

Most of this subsequent output has been decidedly mediocre from what I've seen, and I agree that he tends to overact.

I agree. Especially on Will Smith. I liked whenever, in that one vampire movie he portrayed what was supposed to be a massive, unruly, psychotic, blond-haired, blue-eyed whitey-tidy man. That was funny. Fuck that movie... I Am Legend is one of the best horror novels ever written and... Okay well I will literally sit here for hours and rant about how that movie destroyed the book worse than any other literary-work-turned-film (that I've seen at least..er..and also read the counterpart) so I'll just say yeah, those 'actors' are really bland. Although I have enjoyed certain movies to the respective actors, mainly Travolta, he has some great ones but even so, I can totally see himself leaking through his character in nearly every film he is in.

Once again, I find myself asking the same question.  This is just like the Tiger Woods thing, and you really have to wonder WTF?  Travolta could have had all the gay tail he wanted, quietly and discretely.  Aside from being independently wealthy, his cult probably could have facilitated that on his behalf.  Instead, both of these guys behave foolishly and it winds up costing them dearly (certainly more in Tiger's case, since JT doesn't seem to have much career left anyway).  If you're filthy stinking rich, and you have interests outside of the socially accepted mores, hire a freaking adviser to help keep you out of trouble.

And honestly, I'm pretty surprised by the Scientologists over this.  Seems like they had a vested interest in keeping one of their minions under wraps, and they really blew it.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

I bought Saturday Night Fever on blu-ray last week and still can't stop humming disco tunes all day. Hail Travolta (regardless of whether he likes getting tug-jobs from male masseurs or not) ;D

Swordfish was filmed in my town... thats the only reason it draws interest to me. Unless we are talking about a different Swordfish?
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I love Swordfish. just alot of people think it is horrible. yes it is a bit over the top. But Travoltas performance is amazing. Same for his performance in Pelham.

Not as good as Robert Shaw in the original.

Or Robert Shaw in anything for that matter.

True. Shaw was great. Travopltas take is alot different tho.

On that note finally got around to watching From Paris With Love today. Pretty good action flick, and Travolta plays a badass (although good guy) in typical Travolta style. I was actually peleasantly suprsied by the movie.
