Spiritual communities
« on: December 16, 2010, 02:24:45 AM »
What kind of spiritual community do you belong to?

I've been going to a church but I've found it quite narrow minded and not only intolerant of other views, but that anybody might be reading about other views. What alternatives are there?

It's pretty unlikely you're going to find a church that holds exactly your views. And I think you'll find that the majority of devout believers of any faith don't spend much time reading or thinking about opposing views and would even tell you that doing so is dangerous to your faith. Chances are you'll be able to find a more liberal church in your area, so I'd suggest you look around.

We recently moved and have been checking out churches in our new town. It's been frustrating to say the least. We found a church that had extremely nice people and great worship music, but the officical beliefs of the church were extremely conservative. No women in leadership roles and the like. It was really a bummer because the people were very friendly. We've decided on a Covenant church which seems a little more modern in it's thinking without being crazy liberal.

Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

Interesting that Orthodox Quaker was so high on mine. I don't know anything about what they believe. To answer the original question, I belong to a conservative Presbyterian church, and generally speaking, my church family is great.

My top one was secular humanism too, but several of the questions didn't have an answer that accurately fit my thoughts on the subject.

Yeah, I thought the non-believing answers were kinda posed lackluster. "Yeah, whatever the crap heathens I hear believe in."

And of course, 100% secular humanism.

Or how they lumped "I don't believe in a God or Gods" and "Yeah whatever I don't really care" together. There's a pretty big difference between the two.

That's the thing. They were so indiscriminate about secular beliefs that I didn't even need to look for the right option after question 5. It was always the last option, their heathen waste bucket .

One key belief of such practitioners is the all people go to heaven, no matter what religion they are -- I'm sure, however, that they're much more complex than just that.
