Gorille's Song Roulette - FINAL ROUND RESULTS UP!
« on: December 13, 2010, 07:39:58 PM »
HEY
My roulette is ON! Here is the players:

Sigz
Sonata
Portrucci
Letters
Zantera
Lat
SDN
TheVoxyn

Here is my last.fm, to see which bands I know, but keep in mind that it is incomplete, so if I know the song you'll send me, I'll tell you so. https://www.lastfm.fr/user/Gorille85

WHAT WHAT, IN THE ROULETTE: I want this roulette to be really diverse. I like to view myself as a fairly open-minded dude when it comes to music. I want to hear anything; classical, new-age, ska, electro, extreme metal, pop, whatever. Length doesn't matter too. My favorite genre is avant-garde but it's a close call with some other genres. I love when styles are mix together also. Unexpect is, indeed, my favorite band.

My write-ups might not be that long since I want to do this roulette in time and I'm not a native speaker but I'll do my best! :tup

First round: Open. Send me anything.

Wow, 8 great, great songs! Write-ups coming up later tonight! :tup

I just wanted to know; Zantera PM'd me saying that he'll be away from december 23 to january 2. I'll PM him the next few rounds so he can send me his songs in advance. Now, I need to know if any of you will be away for christmas, if too many people are away, I'll suspend the roulette for the vacation, but if it's only a few of you, I'll PM you the rounds too.

Thanks :)

Gorille, just post all the rounds that you know in advance like I did.  I think it will lead to better selections.  The gap between my favorite and least favorite songs each round kept getting narrower.

I don't know...I feel like it would defeat the purpose of the game. You know, you see you ranked low so you try to pick a better song next time. And by the rankings, you get to know which songs I like, etc. It's fun to discover what next round will be everytime! It's not the same when someone just send all of his songs one-shot and barely check in the thread afterwards...

I'll send the rounds to the players who won't be there during the vacation but I'll keep the surprise for the other. :tup Is that OK for everyone?

Do what you want, but if you know round 4 is going to be something and you tell your participants ahead of time, they have more time to to come remember a song that they think the person will enjoy.  Only Ytse sent all his songs at once.  I wouldn't let participation in a roulette affect my listening habits, but if I knew what the themes were ahead of time, I could make a note that such and such song would be good for an upcoming round.

Like I said, do what you want; but as I said the difference between my favorite and least favorite songs got narrower each round, and maybe part of it was because people had more time to organize their thoughts.

Round 1: Open. I received 8 great songs, and diverse too! :tup I feel bad for having to put some of them at the 2 and 1 points spot...

5 points

Sonata - Röyksopp - The Girl and the Robot: I LOVE this song! The production and the mix of this electropop song are flawless. I also loved the female vocals in it! And that chorus is catchy as hell! :tup

4 points

Zantera - Oceansize - Music For a Nurse: I've heard of this band plenty of times on DTF, now I know I need to get more of them. I loved the build-up and the emotion with the vocals. The overall vibe and atmosphere of this song are really something.

Portrucci - Antonín Dvořák - Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95 - "From the New World": IV. Allegro con fuoco (London Symphony Orchestra): I admit, although I love classical music, I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to actual composers and such. That being said, I thought this song was incredible. The repetion with variation of themes throughout the song made it really enjoyable to follow.

3 points

Letters - Alcest - Percées de lumière: This is mix of Post-Black and Shoegaze if I understood correctly. I loved how the atmophere was really light and up-lifting, unlike most black metal out there. The vocals were awesome (both harsh and clean) and the lyrics in french too!

TheVoxyn - Kyte - Sunlight: Another Post-rockish song! The soothing vocals and pretty electronic sounds really added to the relax and peaceful atmosphere of the song. Good stuff!

2 points

Sigz - Botch - Saint Mathews Returns to the Womb: Awesome mathcore(I think?) song. The raw guitar sound mix with the harsh vocals really made the song for me. It's crazy, all over the place and aggressive. Love that. :)

Lat - Primus - Sgt. Baker: DAT BASSLINE! :hefdaddy A funk rock song with some silly vocals is always good fun! :D Primus is one of those band that I always hear about without actually listening to it. Well, I'm glad I finally did!

1 point

SDN - Russian Circles - Station: I feel like an asshole putting this song last but really, every song was good! :( Some awesome riffs in that instrumental piece, ranging from subtil ambient-like guitar work to downright metal riffage! :metal

Sonata: 5 points
Zantera: 4 points
Portrucci: 4 points
Letters: 3 points
TheVoxyn: 3 points
Sigz: 2 points
Lat: 2 points
SDN: 1 point

Next round: Short song. Something under three minutes.

Round 2: Short songs.  A lot of acoustic pieces this round! :) Once again, it was really hard to rank those songs…

5 points

SDN - Marillion - Memory of Water: From last to first! :P And it’s not for nothing! This song is just beautiful. Very emotional vocals and subtle instrumentation.  I’ll need to check out Marillion more it seems!

4 points

Sigz - Arts the Beatdoctor - Laughs, Drinks, Jokes, Tricks: This one is very different from the other submissions this round. Maybe a form of jazzy hip-hop? I don’t know, but what I do know is that this song is fantastic. There is some sort of creepiness in that ambiance that is really nice. Great song! :tup

Sonata - Gregory and the Hawk - Over and Over: This song is interesting right from the beginning with a pretty cool acoustic guitar pattern.  I like everything about this song: the drums, the keys and of course, the female vocals. It has an almost dreamy mood to it, really good.

3 points

Letters - Lunatic Soul - Otherwhere: Another acoustic song! This one is simple but yet very effective. The vocal melodies are great in this song, in the verses but also in the “chorus”.

Zantera - Neil Young - The Needle and the Damage Done: I’ve heard of Neil and I’ve been meaning to buy Harvest sometime in the future. Although, this song in particular wasn’t familiar to me. Great singing, great guitar-playing, and the tone of his voice really grabbed me.

2 points

TheVoxyn - The Tallest Man On Earth - Troubles Will Be Gone: Wow! His voice is really good, seriously! There is a sadness, or more like a desperation in his voice that really made this song emotional for me.  Impressive guitar work too.

Portrucci - Maxime le Forestier - Je Ne Sais Rien Faire: Pretty good folk tune here. Great guitars once again, and I think there is a flute in there at some point? Anyway, the chorus is really enjoyable and the fact that the lyrics were in French is pretty cool!

1 point

Lat - Napalm Death - You Suffer:  lol. Probably the best song below the 2 seconds mark I’m aware of. Which is obviously a huge accomplishment.

Sonata: 9 points
Zantera: 7 points
Portrucci: 6 points
Letters: 6 points
Sigz: 6 points
SDN: 6 points
TheVoxyn: 5 points
Lat: 3 points

Next round: Weird/strange. It could be a mix of styles or simply a gigantic mindfuck.
