30 Years Ago Today...
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:00:27 PM »
John Lennon died 30 years ago today. Every year I, listen to all of the Beatles albums and what I have from Lennon's solo career in remembrance. I just finished Please Please Me, and while I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles' early career, I'm excited for the mid to late 60s.  Anyone else gonna do a Beatles marathon?

Also, to those that own Anthologies... what do you think of them? I have wanted to get it for awhile, but I can't convince myself to pay the price for it.  :lol

I hear him everytime I turn on the radio.....in some here today/gone today pop artist....his riffs, his vocal styling, everything. Of couse it's the beatles influence I'm hearing but so much of that was him.

I wonder what he'd be doing today if he were still alive.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

Am I an idiot for not liking Beatles/John Lennon while at the same time having loads of respect for the songwriting and impact they had on modern music?

No, but when you come into a thread that is a dedication to the man who is deceased and crap on the music he and his bandmates made, then, yes, you are an idiot.

Note: I mean the general "you," not you specifically.

And as a point of reference, I don't like Pantera, but you don't see me going into the Dimebag thread and making stupid remarks, do you?

But I am sure someone will find a way again to spin this like we have a problem with those who don't like the Beatles. :\

I agree completely, and yes I know you're not referring to me specifically.  :)

Btw, someone told me that if I wanted to get into the Beatles, a good album would be... all of them, in order. Thoughts?

Lennons passing was the worst musical moment of my teens..

only Kurts death hurt like the passing of John.

I was a bit too young to understand losing Hendrix..Elvis

I was 15 when John was shot..I was in the city earlier that week, and I remember hearing the announcement on MNF...I had a huge Lennon poster in my room, and I was just crushed...

I'm not a huge fan of the early material. It is very uneven... most of the best material from that era can be found on the various greatest hits collections. If you want a good starting point, I'd go with either "Sgt. Peppers", "Abbey Road", or "Revolver".

Amazing musician. War is Over is one of my favorite Christmas songs ever. The children singing through the song is hauntingly beautiful to me.

I was just thinking about this song today.  I agree, it's a moving piece of music.

He was the first singing voice I ever heard.  Abbey Road was the album that I would play over and over again when I was only about 4.  I remember him very, very fondly.

But I'm just not in the mood to play the Beatles  :P

If I had a car I'd totally be at Strawberry Fields right now (or earlier today) dropping acid in his honor.

Plans for next year? I think so.
