Partly curiosity, partly boredom, partly because of the lack of new threads.

My first album was Scenes but I didn't get into them when I bought 6DOIT. Which was my 3rd DT cd

Train of thought was the first one I heard, also the first I owned.

Next was Scenes from a memory, now I have everything.

Their first album was the last I acquired.

Not a single album. Learning to Live, The Mirror / Lie, Peruvian Skies, Constant Motion, and ACOS (LSFNY) version are the songs that got me hooked. Then I acquired 8vrm and became obsessed
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

The Glass Prison was the first DT song i heard, and enjoyed it immediately. Pull Me Under was the 2nd song.

Train of Thought was the new album at the time, so i checked it out, and was hooked.

though to be honest, i was only interested in their heavier songs at the time. When i got into prog rock, i revisited their music and realized the beauty and overall greatness in their music

I think it may have been SFAM. In my early prog-discovery days, I was keen to concept albums, particularly those in the rock opera style, so when I discovered Dream Theater, I figured I'd go for that album. Everything on it was GOLD to me at the time, and while it's not necessarily my favorite album now, it still ranks pretty high on my list.

For context, when I discovered DT, TOT was their most recent album, LAB was about to come out, and 8VM was the first new studio release after becoming addicted to them a fan!

My first album was Images and Words about two years ago, but I didn't really get hooked until I bought SFAM (my second album).

Clearing things up, 8vm is by far not my favorite album. But it was the first I'd heard of them and it was enough to strike an interest in me.

Constant Motion was my first song, so technically Systematic Chaos. However, I picked up SFAM and 8V a few weeks later. Liked those. Two weeks later I buy Images and Words. That's when I was truly hooked

Systematic Chaos. Yes, you read that correctly. I had heard nothing from the band before picking up this album on a whim. I was blown away at the time not hearing anything like Dream Theater before. I still really like Systematic Chaos, but not as a full album. There are singular tracks I enjoy quite a bit. Actually, it's all of them except for the way Ministry of Lost Souls is composed and Forsaken. The rest of the music I find still really good.

But yeah, SC got me into DT. I then picked up SFAM and Awake directly after. Thus sealing the deal even further.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Images and Words.
I bought it few months after ACOS was released and i loved it instantly. They became my favorite band before even finish the first listen of Take the Time.
After I&W  i bought ACOS and that sealed the deal for good.

ToT, I got into the band right after ToT and Budokan were released, and I was coming off being huge on thrash so ToT was just perfect and I've been hooked ever since.

Also, you know you've been here a long time when you read ToT and know which one a poster is talking about. (If you're going "which one? what's he's talking about" you haven't been here long enough)

Images And Words. I bought that and Awake at the same time in late 2000. I listened and liked them a lot, but kind of put them on hold for a few years.
I listened to SC when it was released, and it got me interested to check out their other albums. I got instantly hooked.

Short answer: Images And Words

Awake:

I first started getting into Dream Theater in the summer of 2006 [...] I was at the (now defunct) Music World looking to discover some new music for cheap. (I only had $10 on me; CDs in Canada are probably around $15 on average, before tax.)

I started flipping through tracks on my mp3 player and discovered a terrible quality bootleg of Dream Theater covering Metallica's Damage, Inc. I had no recollection of where I'd got that track came from (and I wasn't much of a Metallica fan, to be honest), but I opted to check out their selection of Dream Theater albums. Remarkably, they were selling Awake for $8 before tax, so I luckily had enough money to afford it.

Dream Theater eventually became my favourite band, and Awake has remained my favourite album by them.

WD&DU. Bought the cassette on import after reading Kerrang!'s review and have never looked back.
They became my favourite band when I&W came out at around the time my previous favourite ((Queensryche) died...

I first heard some songs from the Budokan-live and Octavarium back in 2005, but the first album i heard in it's entirety was Systematic Chaos when it was released.
I really liked it back then, but it's funny because now i have a really hard time listening to any of the DT albums post-ToT, i just find it that they have a lot of tracks i dislike, also some i like.
To me, Awake, 6DOIT and Scenes are the holy trinity.

Technically speaking Train of Thought was my first DT album (although my friend introduced me to them the summer Octavarium came out), but the album that got me to like Dream Theater was Awake.  To this day, 6:00 is my favorite DT song, period.

Well, it was Images & Words. To tell you the truth, firstly I didn't like DT music. And my friend played I & W at start, mainly because that is most commercial album if we are going to say it like this, so he wanted show me their music in safe way :)

It is odd that I didn't catch on with the music of DT immediately..  :-\ I never have understood that.

But now...  :metal :metal
