Stress Getting to Portnoy?
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:03:31 PM »
I was on MP.com this evening and saw the pics in this thread, by SteveTheater:

https://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/m2613285.aspx

First thing that struck me was...Mike is thin. WAY thin. Thinnest since he was probably a kid. He actually looks a little unhealthy. I hope he's taking care of himself. The stress can obviously make you lose weight.

MP - time for a steak, my brother!  :lol

Seriously though, hope MP is taking care of himself. He better have a whole turkey to himself next week, and some pie to boot.

EDIT - someone mentioned on MP.com in that thread that Mike is working on fitness. That may be it. If so, good to hear, because Mike is obviously losing weight. Just hopefully he takes a page out of Petrucci's book and muscles up a bit.

p.s. mods -- not sure whether things about MP are supposed to go here or in the General Music Forum, so if I goofed, feel free to move and stuff.

Yeah, it's him working out. He's doing great, really! Mike actually seems to be a good fit for A7X. I like him there, though I do wonder how he handles it...

Reason being, A7X are BIG drinkers. Where does Mike fit in with that? I remember him saying before that he doesn't even go around alcohol. Well... anyone who's seen A7X's "All Excess" knows that's pretty impossible to manage with that band.

That said, doesn't stress CAUSE weight-gain?

This is kind of a bizarre thread. :lol

Anyway, he doesn't look too thin at all.  He looks trim, which is never a bad thing.

They have said before that they never drink before performances. And I think a dead band member causes you to calm out a bit.

What about after performances? And I had heard that when the Rev first died they were all scared to drink but had started again to calm their nerves.

He has mentioned in a tweet or two going to the gym, I think.

I'm sure they are being respectful to Mikes lifestyle.

And it was known that The Rev was the most active "partyer."

I dunno, he looks fine to me. He obviously lost some weight, but touring can do that to you. And it's not a bad think in his case.  :)

I must say, Portnoy is looking great.  He had a period around LaB where he started to show his age, but he looks incredibly toned and youthful now!  Looks like he has many years of drumming stamina left.     :)

I would say he looks less stressed.  I mean, that is the main reason he wanted a break right?  Makes sense.  As you were...

You know, now that he doesn't have to "answer" to DT anymore, it seems he is transforming himself into the metal drummer he always wanted to be...

Since when did he ever answer to DT?  I think you got that backwards.

Yeah that wasn't cool.

He has great abs!
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

I don't think he looks sick, I think he looks okay.  And anyway, stress is a common thing everyone goes through at some time, considering the situation, it wouldn't be a surprise if he were stressed.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Well since this thread was about my tread @ mp.com I will tell ya that Mike has never looked this good before... ever!
He told us he lost 30 pounds these last few months... he's 44 now, I am 41... and he looked even better than me... ha! ;)
So don't worry 'bout his health... he's feeling better than he has ever felt before.

I just hope MP stays sober. It's no mystery that A7X are, or at least can be a party band... I heard MP say he thought he would be a good influence on them. I wonder how that's working out, because now MP is feeling sad, heartbroken, crushed, and he also had a serious, admitted problem with 'drinking' and 'drugging' in the past. On top of that, he could have just made the worst decision of his career... depending on the new drummer and next album. It must be killing Mike to see/hear about these auditions: the big names tossed around, the hype in the fan base, the band deciding to not take a 'hiatus'. I really don't want to see MP get back into bad habits. Hopefully he can keep that responsible role-model figure.

It could sound rather bizarre, but I strongly feel this is the less likely time of all for Mike Portnoy to fall back on the habit(s). The man quit smoking (for some kind of people even more difficult to quit than drugs), boozing, drugging, internet omnipresence (which we should admit is a pretty tough feat) and he finally came to overcome, in my opinion, his worst addiction: total control. He's on a roll.

I would be worried if he had stayed with Dream Theater swallowing frustration.

Said that, the homoerotic undertone in this thread is far beyond fascinating.

So basically what you want to say is fatter = healthier, thinner = less healthy?

Welcome to every discussion that stems from the forums of Mikeportnoy.com, aside from those rare occasions when where eulogizing him or talking about his decision to quite Dream Theater as if there's some deeply profound statement to be made.
