I'm definitely looking to check out more of this band's material.

What album(s) would be good for me to listen to next?

Ancient Dreams, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Tale of Creation.

Any of these are perfect.  I think my fav though would be Nightfall.

So the new album leaked. On my first listen, I give it a solid 8.5/10. Not really digging the last two tracks, but the rest easily stands up to their previous stuff. Waterwitch and, the title track and Prophet are definite highlights. It's such a shame they have to stop here. I think they're really underestimating themselves. I'll definitely try to catch them if they come to my area.

Based on one listen, this one has fewer memorable parts than the last one but it still comes fairly close to rivaling it. I'll have to give it more listens to get a better sense of how the two stack up.

I haven't heard the new album yet, will sometime in the near future. But, I feel like ending on this album might be a good idea. It might just be me, but I feel like they have been going in the same direction for the last several albums and the past decade. Don't get me wrong, their last album was really cool and the self titled wasn't bad. But it kind of blends together after a while.

At least Rob Lowe can go back to make movies now. It's been a while since he had a leading role in something.

first live video with Mats Leven: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tUPTK7-h0Eo
Honestly, I think he's a great singer but I still like Rob's vocals better. Mats just doesn't have quite the same energy as Rob does. That said, I really think the band should continue on and make another album as I'm curious to see how Mats would sound in the studio with them. Also, I'll definitely still see them if and when they come to my area.

I dunno man, I think Mats is giving Rob a run for his money. In that video he sounds fucking SICK. Please Candlemass, come to Seattle. Oh god.

Had a few spins of the new album, and I think it's pretty damn good.  I think it easily stands up to the last one, perhaps even overtaking it.  Some of the solo sections are incredible, really enjoy them.

I love Candlemass...specifically the Messiah and Lowe eras. I've not had much exposure to the other vocalist periods.

I also have not heard the new album, but I plan on getting it ASAP.

I love Messiah-era Candlemass (including the 2005 s/t), and I love Solitude Aeturnus (especially their first three albums).  But for some reason I can't quite warm up to Candlemass with Lowe.  It's good, but I can't quite love it.

I do feel bad for Lowe right now though -- a singer canned for the 'quality of the live performances', ouch.  I read some accounts of people saying he occasionally read lyrics of a sheet on stage, which seems completely nuts to me.

This might mean a more prolific Solitude Aeturnus though, which is great news.

I like Rob on cd, but the Ashes to Ashes DVD, I can see why they replaced him, probably one of the most boring frontman I've ever seen.  I'll have to watch it again, but he may be reading lyrics on this too, I loved watching Messiah with Candlemass but seeing Rob was just a total snooze fest.  His vocals live were ok though.

Listening to the live stuff on CD, I think he sounds good...but he is just standing there and reading the lyrics, I can see that being an issue. If it's your first couple of shows on short notice, maybe...but after being in the band for a few years?

Oh my god Nightfall.  :heart This is the first time I've listened through an album, then instantly put it back on again in a really long time. :2metal: all over the place.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Bump. So Leif Edling has a little side project called Avatarium and their new album is streaming. It's just phenomenal, I think I like it even better than Psalms for the Dead. The vocals and atmosphere are just spectacular. Check it out!

The samples I heard didn't do much for me to be honest, but I owe it to Leif to check it out.

Been on a Candlemass binge lately. Keep listening to Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall, Ancient Dreams and Tales of Creation. I've also listened to King of the Grey Islands once or twice, as well as Psalms for the Dead. Talk about one helluva band!

I'm not entirely sure which album of theirs is my favorite right now. I think EDM has the best vocals by far (shame that Johan declined to join the band), but Nightfall, AD and ToC have some insane instrumental work. Not to mention that Messiah is a great vocalist himself.

I only ever heard the input with Messiah as the lead vocalist...but I LOVED it.   Are the other lead singers different?  Or do they generally try to stick to the same operatic style that Messiah did?

At the Gallows End was one of the most awesome metal songs I had ever heard in my younger days....and I remember loving Nightfall completely, though it's been 20 years since I've listened to the whole album.

The ones I've heard all utilized an operatic style, but they each sound rather different from one another imo.

Johan Langquist, the session vocalist for Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, is my personal favorite of the singers that I've heard. His voice is a bit deeper and warmer than Messiah's, but he hits some killer high notes too. He's also not as over-the-top as Messiah can be at times. I'd compare him to being a cross of sorts between Geoff Tate or Ray Alder and Dio, with a slightly deeper register.

I completely agree though about At the Gallows End. Incredible song. Coincidentally, I'm listening to it right now. :metal

HOLY CRAP. Candlemass just announced on their official Facebook page that Johan Langquist is officially rejoining the band. They're also in the middle of recording a new studio album, so... :metal

I'm losing my mind over this news- I never thought Johan would "rejoin"/join the band full-time since he was only ever been a session singer on the first album and did a few anniversary shows awhile back.

The band somehow patching things up with Messiah and another reunion of that lineup happening? I thought that was maybe doable, though not exactly necessary either. But Johan? Never imagined this.

THE BEST CANDLEMASS SINGER IS BACK, GUYS!!! :metal :metal :metal

Good to see this thread.
I'm a Candlemass fan. Not counting early Sabs, they are probably the best doom metal band ever. First 4 Candlemass albums are all gold in my book with Epicus Doomicus Metallicus being my favorite doom record ever.

I suddenly realize that as a direct consequence, Mats Leven is gone. Didn't realize he was still in the band. But that could be excused since I only know Psalms for the Dead anyway  :lol I love the Mad Queen Be song. Guess that with the impending arrival of the dark part of the year, I'll try and check out more stuff from them, these news about the band made me suddenly realize "Hey, they don't have growls and I like somehow their style", so a dive into their catalog is due sometimes.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

I haven't kept up with this band since they got rid of Robert Lowe - I love those albums that he did with them.  The prior stuff boils down to a greatest hits collection for me, and I honestly just listen to the live album/EP with Robert singing more than the original versions.
