I'm like a lot of you. I don't smoke weed-in fact, my ex taking up the habit and the arguments that resulted from it was one of the main reasons we broke up-but jesus, I love this subgenre. Possibly because, shorn of the stoner trappings, most of these bands are playing straight up 70s metal and doom and I love the shit out of that kind of thing. A great man so-called stoner bands are just perfect for cranking up and rocking out to, which is kinda weird if you think about it.

Reminds me, I need the new High on Fire...
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

I was just coming in here to comment on it, reviewing it for Nem's site. It's quite killer actually.

Gods of the Earth has to be one of my favorite albums ever.

Also, I implore you guys to check out Colour Haze's stuff. Their self-titled album...damn what a ride. The song Love in particular just blew me away the first time I heard it.

Gods of the Earth is great but my favorite Sword album is Age of Winters.

Colour Haze are awesome too. Gotta check out their full discography at some point.

Only really familiar with The Sword and Kyuss. Which albums from the others would you recommend?

Kyng only has one album out right now, "Trampled Sun," but it's a beast -- their new one, "Burn the Serum," will be out mid-April.

For Spiritual Beggars I'd recommend "Another Way To Shine."  They were first recommended to me by someone who knew I loved The Sword and Kyuss.   :xbones

For DOWN I'd go with their first one, "NOLA."

For Crowbar I'd go with their self-titled one or "Lifesblood for the Downtrodden."

Definitely noted. I'll be sure to check them out then. :tup

Also, Samsara Blues Experiment I've discovered recently, and they're pretty amazing. Another must listen to.

Another good one is Red Fang.  They've got a bit more of the 70s rawkish sound, not true stoners, but still very good.  I prefer their first two albums although their latest, "Whales and Leeches," is getting some love from the critics.  Personally, I'd rank it third after the other two....

Found this awesome instrumental stoner band called Belzebong.

Check out this song from their upcoming album. It riffs so damn hard!

As someone who's never been high and has never listened to this genre, can someone explain to me why this genre is attached to being high? Does pot somehow make this particular style of music better than it makes other genres of music?

Well I don't smoke pot so I can't answer your second question, but a lot of stoner bands write pot-related lyrics and have pot imagery on their album covers. Then again, quite a few stoner bands don't (i.e. The Sword, High on Fire). But you definitely don't have to be high to enjoy it.

it's not really a term that accurately describes the genre tbh. i would go as far as to say that it is misnomer. it just kind of stuck.

also, i've been vibing on earthless for the past vouple weeks, and oh my god are they amazing. lost in the cold sun is a track that really sticks out.

sleep - dopesmoker

holy shit. this is possibly the greatest thing that's ever been recorded. 63 minutes of pure sludgy goodness.

I always thought Dopesmoker was a stoner metal essential. It and Dopethrone I consider some of the peak of the genre. :metal Barring that they both begin with "Dope" in their names. :lol

I recall feeling quite underwhelmed by that album some months ago, but that was quite before getting into stoner, so I guess I'll give it another chance.

Had a listen to the new Witchcraft album and I'm extremely disappointed. Such a dull, plodding snoozefest that absolutely pales in comparison to Legend.

Too bad. It was by far one of my most anticipated albums of 2016.

Stoner albums that I really dig:

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun, Welcome to Sky Valley, ...And the Circus Leaves Town
Electic Wizard - Dopethrone, Come My Fanatics
Sleep - Holy Mountain (Dopesmoker bores me)
Clutch - Blast Tyrant
Elder - Dead Roots Stirring
Down - NOLA (I'd take it over any Pantera album)
Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity, Powertrip
High on Fire - Death Is This Communion, Blessed Black Wings
Melvins - Stoner Witch
Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance
Orange Goblin - The Big Black, Time Travelling Blues
