The Stoner rock/metal appreciation thread
« on: November 11, 2010, 09:25:07 AM »
This had do be done. A stoner appreciation thread. I haven't touched drugs in my life, but I still think it's epic music.

Electric Wizard - Funeralopolis
Lowrider - Flat Earth
Kyuss - Green machine (LOL at the second highest rated comment on this one)

Go on discuss stoner rock/metal and the epicness sorrounding this genre.

Sleep is one of my favorite stoner bands. And I dunno if Mastodon would really be considered a stoner band, but their music is crazy high.  :lol

Electric Wizard is great too! I actually haven't heard the other two you listed so I'll check those out soon!  :tup

Oh my lord.  I am such a huge Stoner Metal fan it's not funny.  However, I do feel a lot of it is clumped in that doesn't fit the mold, that is, sludge bands and/or psychedlic bands.  Nevertheless, let me please add to the discussion (ripped from my Hidden Gems thread found here: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=7969.0):

Black Water Rising - https://www.myspace.com/blackwaterrising

If you like big riffs, raspy but melodic vocals, and balls-to-the-wall riff rock, these guys are for you.  Each song has a huge wall of guitars, mixed with a grooving rhythm section and gritty vocals.  Stoner Metal and 70s classic rock mixed with modern Hard Rock edge at its best.

Throttlerod - https://www.myspace.com/throttlerod

Great stoner metal band.  Slick grooves, heavy riffs, great band all around.  If you're a hard rock, riff guy like me, you'll love this band.

Karma To Burn - www.myspace.com/karmatoburn

Damn I love these guys.  Karma To Burn is simply put the king of instrumental stoner metal.  Their songs are filled with some of the sickest head-banging inducing riffs that will leave your neck sore.  Check out "Twenty", "Twenty-five" and "Nineteen" Now.  I mean it.  NOW.  Prepare to rock the fuck out.

Spiritual Beggars - https://www.myspace.com/spiritualbeggars

These guys might be more known to some of you than some others that I have posted, but that certainly doesn't mean that they aren't a hidden gem.  Listen to their albums "Mantra III" and "Ad Astra" and you will understand that the Stoner rock grooves these guys emit are high quality.  Great gritty lead vocals and thick guitars match the group's solid rhythm section to produce a Stoner rock sound that raise the bar.

There's a lot more where this came from.

I never smoke dope and get high, but I love this genre.

Spiritual Beggars
High on Fire
Cathedral (even though they are classed as doom, they show some elements.)
Kyuss

Even Sabbath and some Soundgarden I'd definitely class as stoner.  I've also been meaning to check out Sleep for a while now.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Mastodon is awesome, so is Black Sabbath. I wanna get into this genre more. I know Mastodon likes Sleep, and Soungarden's very good too.

Karma To Burn's opening for The Sword, but they're playing a venue near me that's 18 and up with I.D.... :tdwn

The rescheduled it with the new drummer. I forgot who he is, but he's relatively unknown.

I suggest you listen to this playlist I just made on Grooveshark.  I went through my iTunes library and selected a great handful of my favorite Stoner Metal songs.  While they might not all be "quintessential", they will definitely get you in the right direction:  https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/Stoner+Metal+Playlist+/39173868

Other songs that aren't on Grooveshark that you should check out:

"Feed My Soul" by Voodoo Six - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAG_9csIl4g
"Electrifying" by Spoiler - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K2N_DYPoZw
"Khan (World Of Fire)" by Solace - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzQxtt8sWLY

Hope you enjoy man!

I'm a stoner and I like metal. Where do I start with this genre?

I'm looking for a band or album. I'm not really interested in a grooveshark playlist. :loser:

Sleep - Dopesmoker

Its a single 60 minute stoner classic. Awesome yet catchy riffing, what more do you want?  :lol

Here's simply the first part of the song if you're interested:

Stoner prog!
Not really prog, its basically 3-4 riffs thrown around for 60 minutes but I'll be damned if those aren't some of the catchiest and most  :metal riffs I've ever heard. The song never really feels like it stretches on forever to me despite the insane length. I forget its an hour long whenever I listen to it in fact  :lol

:lol I know it's not prog. I was just joking about the fact that the entire album is one track.

I'll give it a good listen tomorrow after my classes and I finish listening to the Melvins and The Sword first.
