10. Paza

Oh man, the chip just slides right off the plate! Delightful stuff with some neat-o vocoder junk happening. Lots of cool little changes in composition as well, which is always welcome. BUT NOT ABSOLUTE PERFECTION, hence the tenth position.

I'd like to just say at this point that some of these will not be, er, "pure" chiptune artists. By that I mean that they incorporate more instruments than just the gameboy/NES/atari/etc. chipsets to make their music. Those sounds will be a big part of their sound, though.

But some of them definitely will be artists who largely use only chipsets.

9. Animal Style

This guy really knows how to make some quality chip shit. As you can see, he uses a bunch of guitar, mostly run through a boatload of effects. He has a cool way of making really unique sounds that all add up to something wonderful. You can hear a strong influence in his compositions from both Jazz and old video game music composers.

It's a huge genre, there are just so many artists. I discover at least one new chip artist every day, I would say.

8. The Depreciation Guild

Here's something fresh, a post-rock/shoegaze/chiptune outfit. These guys write amazing songs, everything from rocking tunes to beautiful post-rock compositions. This is also the first band on this list so far to feature vocals, which they handle really well. Gorgeous.

Alright, I'm going to put two albums here, because one is free and the other, my actual favorite, costs actual people money.

The free one first.

Nautilus (EP)

This release is a very good initial display of their abilities and unique sound. Get it free here.

The not free one, but my absolute favorite.

In Her Gentle Jaws

This is one hell of a beautiful album, showcasing all of their strongest points. I would recommend checking out the song "Heavy Eyes" if you're interested.

7. iqtu

Who's hungry for some very relaxed, at times ambient chiptune? iqtu is a very refined and creative electronic/chiptune artist who never fails to delight. Imagine a swirling dreamscape of butterflies fluttering around space, resting here and there on the rings of Saturn. A brilliant stream of neon colors wafts through the galaxy at a sluggish rate. One of the butterflies flutters through the stream and sends the colors spraying out in a euphoric show of beauty and grace, and each of the droplets of color becomes another butterfly with milky-rainbow wings.
