This has been a suspiciously mild winter for us. It's January and for a good chunk of the month I've been at a pretty comfortable temperature. No huge snowfalls either.

I agree, and speaking of mid-Florida, I was visiting a friend a few years back in Tampa Bay when a hurricane started heading towards us. I was SO excited that my trip coincided with it, but was left disappointed as the storm was downgraded to a tropical storm, changed directions multiple times, and ended up hitting every part of Florida except Tampa Bay.

Coming from Germany, I still don't understand why not more power cables are underground here. The accumulated cost of constantly having to repair power lines every freaking blizzard must have outdone the single cost of digging, by orders of magnitude.

It's these backwards towns in which I live in. Many tree and towns don't budget enough to trim back these trees every year.

I think part of it is that the US has never really had the reset switch hit...unlike Germany, Japan, and swaths of the UK in the 1940s. We're bound to our old infrastructure, just making it work with klugy modifications. Many places that got the slate wiped clean essentially got a do-over on infrastructure. That was perhaps what jumped out at me the most visiting Munich after having lived in NYC for a few years.

Which brings me to a theory of mine that no matter how well you manage a country/company, the accumulative effect of legacy will drag you down, until some second-generation country/company comes in and wipes the floor with you because they have a clean slate.
It's like drag racing, but new cars can come in later.

They were calling for up to 2 feet for my area earlier this morning. By around noon they were issuing warnings to leave work early, get home before the evening rush, because that was supposedly when it was going to really start coming down and it would cause white-out conditions.

It's 9:30 pm and we've barely got a dusting. So much for the "historic snowfall." $:\$

I was really hoping for a day off work tomorrow.
