The top 20 Vocalists Thread 3.0 v.Zantera (finished nao)
« on: November 05, 2010, 05:07:52 AM »
I've been meaning to start a thread like this for a while (been a some months since my last one), and the topic "vocalists" has been fascinating ever since darkes7 did his thread.
Originally i wanted to make this back after darkes7 did his, but i waited because i didn't want it to be confusing or anything, so i waited.
Now however since gorille85 did his, i'm just thinking "screw it!" and i'll go ahead with this anyway.
I've been giving the green light from both skydivingninja and gorille85 for this. :)

This list will feature my top20 favorite vocalists, and the range/power of the voice isn't the major thing i'm looking for, it's more how it fits the music, and what it adds to the whole picture.
Some of these choices are names you have heard before and are familiar with, but it will also have names you don't know, which may lead to you discover new bands/artists. :)
I would actually be surprised if someone knows all of these picks.
Influenced by Gorille85, a spot can be several singers (if they're in the same band, and the harmony-singing is a major thing).
Hopefully people will follow this, i will start out by posting 2 and 2, then when i get down to the "core", it will probably be just 1 per day.
Let's go.  ;)

20. Maynard James Keenan (Tool)

"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now
My time now
Give me my, give me my wings!"

I think the first thing people think about in the case with MJK, is that he's a very... (how can i put this nicely?) bizarre person. :P
I've read about things he has supposedly said, and he seems like a douche.
However, i feel like this gets so much attention that people often forget that he's a great singer.
His voice would go under the "fits the music"-category, and the way he delivers the lyrics is great.
A good example of this is the song "Parabol" which serves like a intro to "Parabola", and the music is very subtle in it, and the singing is enough to make the whole song.
It should also be noted that he has a few side-projects (A Perfect Circle and Puscifer), but i'm not really familiar with them except for a few APC-songs.
MJK's voice is one of the main-things in Tool in my opinion, and i couldn't imagine Tool without him.

Songs: 10 000 days (part 2), Vicarious, Parabol and Lateralus

----------

19. Jonas Renkse (Katatonia)

"You used to be like my twin
And all that's been
Was it all for nothing
Are you strong when you’re with him
The one that’s placed you above us all
"

The first swedish-singer on my list (i won't reveal more  ), a voice that has gone through a lot of changes during the years.
In early Katatonia we can find harsher vocals, but he has gone more to a pure clean-singing style which he has displayed on the last couple of Katatonia-albums.
What makes me impressed is how Jonas uses his voice very much like an instrument, that his voice alone makes Katatonia very melodic, even when it's a heavier song with doomy guitars.
I also love how he manages to sound almost exactly like Mikael Åkerfeldt in "Idle Blood", but then sounding like himself on the other songs.
Almost like a homage.  :tup

Songs: Idle Blood, Onward Into Battle, My Twin and Ghost of the Sun.

----------

Updates will come later.  ;)

Two great singers, but Maynard is light years ahead of Jonas IMO.  Look forward to the rest of this list.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Basically what wolfking said... also Maynard's vocals in APC are generally much better than Tool.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Since i'm not sure how much time i will have tomorrow, i thought i would post the next 2.
Both these spots are vocalists that i rarely see much cred for, at least compared to the 'big' names. :P

18. Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief)

"You know I would make you wait for,
A one in a million chance?
All I can hear around me,
The sound of love that passed.
"

Okey, so this is a band i've been getting into very recently, so i'm not that familiar with the entire discography yet.
But amazing progressive-band, and the vocals especially has made me fall in love with the music.
Bruce is one of those singers that has a really good voice that fits with the music, and the great talent of making the lyrics become something more then just words.
His voice has a very soothing effect, and it makes me kinda peaceful in a way. :)

Songs: 3000 Days, Preparation For Meltdown, Tightly Unwound & Shoot First.

----------

17. Jon Courtney & Chloë Alper (Pure Reason Revolution)

"I'll rest while I'm feeling tired
From these sombre nights
We disarm the words
Dissolve the night.
"

Another modern progressive rock-band, where the vocals play a big part.
Harmony-singing is one of the best things about PRR, and it's a great mix with male and female vocals.
I think the best example of the vocals i'm talking about would be in the song "The Gloaming".
It has a lot of changes where Jon sings a bit, then Chloë sings a bit, with the other doing backing vocals, and near the ending there's a part where it's pretty much just the singing, because it's THAT good.
Also, inb4 Chloë is cute. ;)

Songs: The Gloaming, Bloodless, Black Mourning & Valour.

Next update is probably late tomorrow, or early on Sunday. :P

Next update inc!
This is 2 names that i don't think a lot of here knows about or listens to, so the reactions will be kinda interesting. :)

16. Tim Bowness (No-Man)

"take a taxi through the snow
tell them you love them,
don’t let go.
through the tunnel moving slow,
tonight’s there’s nowhere
you won’t go.
"

No-Man is one of the SW-side projects i don't see a lot of cred for here, mainly i'd say Blackfield and SW's solo-stuff get's most of the attention, but No-Man is very unique music compared to those i mentioned.
And the voice of Tim Bowness is a major part of it, which is funny because i didn't use to like him when i first discovered the band.
The voice is a grower definitely, and what i love about it is how haunting he can sound, and that he manages to make the listener feel the emotions he's singing.
It's really special, and listening to a song like "Truenorth" (where i took the lyrics from) in headphones is such a great experience, and it's one of the things that makes No-Man one of the best dreamy art-rock acts out there.  :tup

Songs: Truenorth, All Sweet Things, Together We're Stranger and The Shell of a Fighter.

----------

15. Neil Young (solo, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)

"I've seen the needle
and the damage done
A little part of it in everyone
But every junkie's
like a settin' sun.
"

So, where do you begin with an artist like Neil Young?
He's one of the biggest musicians in the world, and has influenced countless bands and artists.
Normally he's known for his folk-music, though over the years he has experimented a lot, crossing paths with many different genres such as country, electronica, hard-rock etc.
His voice is very unique, and it's one of the several things that makes him so good!
He's also an amazing song-writer and a great guitarist, but when it comes to the singing it just makes the music very magical, and i remember about a year ago when i listened to his "Live at Massey Hall"-album every friday-night in my headphones, because it was just something magical about it, a simple musician playing songs live all by himself, using just piano and acoustic guitar, but making it so fantastic.
If you're into folk or acoustic-music, you really should listen to that album.. i can't recommend it enough.
You could also say he's quite progressive in the sense that he has explored many territories, something that wasn't as common back then as it is now.

Songs: The Needle and the Damage Done, Old Man, Sugar Mountain and Like a Hurricane.

Next 2 will probably be late late tonight or tomorrow, depends on how much time i have. ;)

Updating with the next 2, and this is 2 names the majority here are familiar with.   ;)

14. James LaBrie (Dream Theater)

"A day like today
My whole world has been changed
Nothing you say
Will help ease my pain
"

So this is someone you probably haven't heard of.
He sings in this progressive (cheesy) band, and during the instrumental-sections he walks around on the stage like a pirate, under the stage-name Captain James Sparrow.
I'm probably not the only one to say this, but James has always been my favorite-member in DT, and in the whole ocean of instrumental-wankery, his voice manages to keep all the parts together.
I'm also amazed by what a cool guy he is, watching interviews and reading about him, he just comes off as being very humble.
His voice is great because it can cover a lot of ground, which is perfect in a progressive band because he can sing songs like Constant Motion and The Dark Eternal Night, but he can also sing songs like Disappear and Wait For Sleep.
Disappear is my favorite DT-song, and the vocal-delivery of the lyrics in that song is the main thing why i love it so much.

Songs: Disappear, Under a Glass Moon, Octavarium and Voices. (gotta narrow it down)

----------

13. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden, Solo)

"I can't begin to understand in all the lies
But on your deathbed I can see it in you eyes
Just as clear as all the sweat upon your brow
It really makes sense I can see it clearly now
"

Another well known singer around here, Bruce has been one of my favorite singers for like 6 years now.
Back then i listened to really shitty music (not kidding), Maiden was one of the first bands i discovered that got me into metal and heavier stuff.
I remember the first time i heard Maiden, me and a couple of friends were chilling out after school and one of my friends played "Powerslave", and god it was really awesome how Bruce sounded so evil and powerful in that song.
Ever since then i've been a huge fan, and i gotta add that i love his solo-stuff as well, and it might even be more variety there (on the singing-front) then what Maiden offers, but overall he displays a great vocal-range, and he sings the softer songs just as good as the heavier ones.
I also wanna mention the song "Navigate the Seas of the Sun", one of his solo-songs that i had on repeat for almost a whole summer, that song is godlike.

Songs: The Legacy, Powerslave, Hallowed Be Thy Name & Fear of the Dark.

Next update will come tomorrow sometime.
Been updating pretty frequently this far, but since the weekend is almost over i will most likely post 2/a day and not 4 from now on. :P

Your list is interesting Portrucci, though i won't give anything away yet. :P
Also, here to bring you all today's update. :)
About Darkes7 and mizzl's discussion; PoS is "just" a good band for me (nothing i put on when i want awesome music), and i've never really cared for DG as a singer.
I guess that answers it. ;)

12. Stacy DuPree & Sherri DuPree (Eisley)

"Still floating soft
I am dreaming and I'm glad I lost
And still with my fingers
I'm drawing circles in the water
In the water
And still, still you're always there
"

One of the bands that has a new appreciation-wave here on the forum, i'm one of the many that hadn't heard about them before.
Great indie/pop-band, where vocals plays a major part, and the singing is just beautiful.
I only have Room Noises, so i'm not sure how the vocals has changed on the second album, but on the first album they're kinda in the center of it all.
Even though i'm still a noob and can't tell who is who on the singing, i still dig it like crazy.  ;)

Songs: Memories, Golly Sandra, Lost at Sea and Just Like We Do.

----------

11. Mariusz Duda (Riverside, Lunatic Soul)

"We could've missed another day
Not knowing how to talk
Where to go
We could've missed another night
Only... For what?
"

One of my favorite-singers from the new-wave of progressive bands, Mariusz Duda has the ability to sing really good in both slower songs, and in faster/heavier songs.
In this case that's the main-thing why i love him, it's how amazing he sings the lines in "Left Out", the very subtle but awesome outro in "Hybrid Times", the middle-section in "Second Life Syndrome" and let's not forget the whispered-part in "Parasomnia".
There are just very many wow-parts on the vocal side, and even though i'm not that familiar with Lunatic Soul yet, the songs i've heard also focuses on Duda's amazing voice.

Songs: Left Out, Hybrid Times, Second Life Syndrome and Parasomnia.

Tomorrow we'll be entering top10-territory.  :)
