Lateralus's Top 13 Underrated/Obscure Musicians
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:46:30 PM »
Come one, come all. Within this here thread I am going to posting some of my all time favourite musicians that fit under the category of (what I consider) fairly underrated. There are so many musicians out there who don't quite get the recognition they deserve. I'll be doing 13, as the title says and I'll be updating one musician a day (assuming I get around to it every day, hopefully). Before Sonatafanica get's on my case about me using the term obscure and then naming of musicians that aren't indie, just keep in mind I'm going of both my own personal experience based off of DTF conversations and from those in real life. Some of the artists I have on my list are actually very well known and very well respected, but still don't quite get the recognition they deserve. And not to mention have always seemed to me as very modest musicians. So no, Maynard James Keenan WILL NOT be on this list.

Anyway, let's get the ball a-rolling with #13:

#13 - Michael Amott (Ex Carcass, Arch Enemy)

Yes, the man is a widely respected guitar player and melodic death metal musician. But I've really only noticed that well...amongst those who are big fans of melodic death. Which by the way is a personal favourite sub-genre of mine. The thing I love about Michael Amott is that the man just knows how to take the heaviest of music but still keep it melodic and filled with feeling. This is much more noticeable particularly on Carcass's album Heartwork, which is the bands most melodic sounding, seeing how it's the second album Amott played on with Carcass, after they went from a more straight-forward death metal and...grind-core band. I digress, Amott's style has always felt very definitive to me and has always stuck out as one of the coolest styles for the melodic death sub-genre. I also feel the man might be a little lesser known outside of the Carcass fans because most people, when thinking Arch Enemy, think "I would love to hear Angela Gassow growl during sex". But damn, can Amott fucking play.

Favourite songs
- Lavaging Expectorate of Lysergide Composition, Bury Me an Angel, Heartwork.

To be continued.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Plus he's doing Angela :metal (actually I think they're married now)

Don't want to take anything away from Chris Amott though. He can have a :metal as well.

Chris is a great player as well, no doubt. But Michael's overall sound and writing is what I've payed the most attention too.

Also I plan on updating later this afternoon. I'm thinking I'll do it around the time I get home from classes each day.

Aw yeah, it's update time.

#12 - Hasse Fröberg (The Flower Kings)

For those of you who are not familiar with Hasse or The Flower Kings, they are a prog-rock band fronted by Roine Stolt. Hasse is the bands second guitar player and as well partners up in doing vocals with Roine, along with taking the reigns now and then. What I enjoy so much about Hasse is the dimension his voice adds to TFK's music. I love how well his singing fits the music, but still adds contrast to Roine's deeper voice. He often gets a tad overlooked, but Hasse is truly a wonderfully talented singer and guitar player.

Favourite songs - End on a High Note, Life Will Kill You, Hit Me With a Hit.

But Buckethead isn't obscure.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

I agree with Michael Ammot...The last couple Arch Enemy albums have had no feeling whatsoever though. I love Carcass and everything Arch Enemy did up until Wages of Sin, then they turned into a feelingless machine.  :o

And you guys are very wrong it isn't Michael who is banging Angela...It's Christopher.

Great choice for Hasse! Have you heard his new solo album by Hasse Fröberg & The Musical Companion titled Future Past? It's pretty amazing and filled with great songs, some awesome epics, and wonderful (sometimes flowery) melodies and harmonies!
