I’m so happy that people are following/posting; thanks guys!
Sorry it’s been a while since my last post…as Numbers has probably said already, things are insane around here (but even worse for me, with all my overachiever extracurricular activities
).
12. The Indigo Girls- A while ago, I attempted to make an “official” thread about this duo, and it failed miserably. I was somewhat upset and disappointed that no one really listens to them on the interwebz, because they are missing out.
Although they might not be proggy or
enough for the rest of the board, no one can say that their music isn’t clever and well thought-out. Amy Ray and Emily Sailers, though nearly polar opposites, make and incredible couple. Amy Ray’s compositions have more fun lyrics with a punkish flavor, while Emily Sailers lyrics are rigorous, elegant, and poetic, with her music having a cleaner flow to it. You can hear this in their voices as well, with Ray’s being rather gravelly and Sailers’ being somewhat angelic. Their vocal harmonies are impeccable and incredible.
Both are incredible guitarists; I’ve tried to learn quite a few of their songs before and failed miserably, and fingerpicking is my forte! Nothing ever sounds the same from song to song for them.
Two things I especially appreciate about their music is the little details that they add, such as a continuous djembe drum throughout the song, screams, a music box, or simply having a song with as single guitar and a triangle. I also love the subject matter on which they write; one of my favorites is all about reincarnation, but in an unbelievably creative way (check out
Galileo for all of you people who are curious).
11. Machine Head- In the beginning, I only really liked/knew
Aesthetics of Hate. But after Cole gave me “The Blackening,” I became slightly obsessed. That album is UH-MAZE-ING. “Burn My Eyes” is beautiful as well. Davidian is one of their best songs, no questions asked. Rob Flynn’s barking is exceptional, but I also cannot get enough of his singing voice, which is just as good, if not better. Their music tears out your heart, stretches and pounds it a bit, and then reattches it. It’s moving and rip-roaring and just all-around open-mouthed-wowness. The only reason this band is not up insanely higher on my list is just because I don't know enough. Which shall soon be remedied.
