That's what I'm thinking really. They're assembling ideas and riffs that they can try out with a fuller setup later.

Why would they be paying for studio time then?  All that can be done at home.  Just doesn't really make much sense to me.  It's possible they are just getting their gear ready/getting sounds ready, but the drums take the longest to get sounds for anyways so you'd think they'd get started on that as well.

I have a feeling the drummer is there and that its someone who we haven't really been speculating on.

Well, if the place was rented long in advance, i.e. maybe even with MP initially, and now they had the choice of using the space or losing the money.

With all these JR special shows and appearances, are DT even in the studio now?  If so, how can they get down to business with in-store this, and speaking appearance that?

It's possible.  But why wouldn't they have their drummer come too?  I just feel like it is more likely the guy is there with them.

Until someone from the band says that the drummer isn't yet in the studio, then I am assuming that he is.  They've never worked piecemeal like that before.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

The NY show would've obviously been easy to get to, but they would've had to prepare for it some. Plus Jordan had his appearance at NAMM and will have one at MacWorld which are both in California.

Sounds like John, John, and the drummer are the driving forces so far. Not that that's a bad thing.

bosk1 IS in the studio. And he's directing the new songs. He made his own inspiration corner for the guys, consisting of "Summertime Girls" from Y&T, and Megadeth's Risk.

Beware.

p.s. he's also the new drummer's tech, so he's walking around with drumsticks constantly.

True, but they're also in a situation that they've never been in before. There's no reason they couldn't change things up, especially if finalising the details with the new drummer/label/etc is taking longer than expected.

Why would they be paying for studio time then?  All that can be done at home.  Just doesn't really make much sense to me.

That's my thinking as well, the plan was to go in January so the studio time was presumably booked already.

My latest thinking is, they got the guy, but he had to fulfill some previous commitments. DT had the studio set up, so they said "you know, we're gonna hash some stuff out in the studio, and later you will join us."

That's a plausible scenario.  And while jamming with a drum machine (or, at times, without drums at all) isn't ideal, it's certainly workable if that's what you have to do.  They certainly wouldn't be the first band do to that.
