there is quite a bit of difference in how MP plays the double bass and how Lang plays the double bass. Lang seems to do it just to show off.

Well we don't know 100% who auditioned and who didn't. But they said they got world class drummers and Weckl is a world class drummer who would probably inspire people like JR and JM in ways that MP never could. I think it's pretty likely that he auditioned, and DT would be foolish to turn him down, here check out this vid of him.

Weckl is pretty much all jazz fusion so I don't think DT would hire a drummer not in their style.
