The last DT drummer was teaching a student named Max how to drum........... :eek

Maybe Mangini's going out on the road with some other band?

Uh oh...
Is there even any point speculating anymore? There's no other reason why Mike Mangini would quit his spot at Berklee at exactly this time. I really hoped it was going to be Marco Minnemann.

I am now officially sold on Minnemann AND Mangini. Either way I will be very happy. At the end of the day, DT know what will be best for them, and ultimately they will pick the best candidate, even if it is in fact Aquilles or someone of that nature.
Keep in mind, about minnemann, there is very little evidence to suggest that he is out at all; you could interpret Jordans' jam with him as to mean that he is the drummer and this is some sort of casual bonding activity, or that he didn't make the cut, but Jordan/minnemann tee'd up a jam because they are interested in each others playing style (as a result of the audition and conversations they had).

I have to say, Minnemann is PERFECT for JR's solo stuff. He's like a metal-er version of Rod Morgenstein.

I think this is the closest we have to MM playing some DT.

Looking at that fb post, the part where the OP says "he gets made when I mention it" is kind of odd.  Why would he be mad about him speculating that he's going to play in DT if he got the gig and indeed will be playing in DT.  If he did get the gig, most people would give a wink and a "wait and see."

Still, if he's "busy for a while," that could mean Mangini is just kind of weird and he'll be drumming for DT anyway.  Still hoping for Marco.

Maybe he's getting mad because of all the legal mumbo jumbo going on in the background. He's probably got a contract with Berklee to teach for x amount of years. That has to be worked out before the DT stuff can start. Talking about it could jeopardize the whole thing.

I'm not an expert on teaching in college professors hiring procedures, but teachers don't really sign contracts to teach at a school for X years.  Its just a job that you can get fired from or quit.  Colleges just tend to try and find people who aren't looking for a temporary thing when they hire professors.  Maybe Berklee operates differently, but I have a feeling that's not really the case.

I'm sure we'll have a drum solo during the next tour so everybody can see how good the new drummer is.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

Exactly.  Anyone who can say he doesn't impress has something wrong with them.  Whether you subjectively like him or not is another story, but you can't really say he isn't extremely impressive.

Unless you're not impressed, because that's another level of subjectivity.

He's definitely fast and powerful, I just haven't ever seen him play a memorable groove.  :blush  Marco Minnemann on the other hand seems to have no trouble making complex patterns sound fluid, and he puts a lot of "detail" into every note. Don't get me wrong, Mangini is definitely great, otherwise he wouldn't be so respected, I just think Minnemann has a goofier attitude that goes well with the prog rock side of DT that I like.

Hum.. another hypothesis using the fact that they haven't announced it yet and are really taking care of keeping it secret:

Choosen one: Aquiles Priester

They haven't announced it because they are waiting for his Work Visa (there is a chance inmigration can say no). It haven't been leaked from a good "truthful" source because they (good sources) know it can fall if he doesn't get the visa.

Just an hypothesis tho, i still hope it's Lang!

I really hope not! He is a washed up metal dude. Dream Theater need finesse, something that AP does not have. What is with all the talk about AP? He shouldn't even be considered. Marco is def my first choice. He would complete the virtuosity that DT need, and that MP lacked,

Also check out this post from earlier in the thread which really showcases Mangini's versatility:

Well, for a start you clearly haven't bothered watching the videos that people have been posting.

Plus, the same can be said for pretty much all technically proficient drummers. People post vids on youtube to show off their chops, often doing drum-only solos. Has no bearing on how they play within bands on different styles.

Though my favorite to fill the position is Lang, Mangini is more than capable. The good thing is that whether it's Mangini or Lang or even Minnemann DT will raise the bar drumming wise, and that can only be a good thing. To me drum solos are not the ideal place to evaluate the player's creativity as most of the time they are just showing off their technical skills.

Most of what I've heard from Mangini (The 3 LaBrie albums, Extreme (Waiting for the Punchline) and Annihilator) he plays really solid, and tastefully, yet in my opinion nothing to write home about, to me honest if it were for those recorded performances alone I would've never thought of him as a candidate. Granted none of those recordings feature music as complex as DT's. I'm sure he can pull it off and then some.

What I've heard from Lang, is mostly he's instrumental album StOrk, the music has a lot in common with DT in terms of progressiveness and heaviness, his performance is very creative and simply mind blowing, I guess that is why I tend to side with Lang.

When all is said and done, we will end up with DT with an incredible drummer plus the benefil of having discovered lots of new music with increadible drumming along the way, I know I have.
