Not only is Mangini extremely amazing, but he's completely ambidextrous.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Yea, but that would ......................oh I get it.

Why even consider him as a drummer in such a progressive focused band as DT?

Because he's really, really, really good. And for those wanting someone stylistically different than Mike, Priester fits that bill.

Well, if you know of any material of him online that shows how really, really, really good he is, I would gladly see or hear it. Remember that the new drummer also needs to play DT's old songs at least as good as MP does. Being an amazing power metalist doesn't necessarily imply that.

check out freakeys.  It was an LTE-style instrumental album he drummed on.  Here's a sample:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPKz6VdhgLI

I don't know what he'd bring to the table in terms of compositions/arrangements/ideas, but in terms of chops he could easily do the job and then some IMO.

That was not LTEish at all, unless you count anything with shredding as LTEish.

The drums were almost entirely in 4/4 and I could play just about all of that myself and I'm not much of a drummer. He also lacks ANY soul or groove in any of the videos I've seen from him. He's a very good metal drummer. Nothing more.

I can definitely see the LTE connection, though the music was somewhat uninspired (I guess not everyone can be JP/JR). As for the drummer, he's pretty clearly a step down from MP in terms of creativity, but I wasn't completely unimpressed. There were some interesting drum parts at around the 3:00 mark. I think there are better options though...

Hehe, exactly my thoughts after seeing the video (except that I can't play drums :-\). The song is some of the most progressive I have seen with Priester (which says a lot), and his complexity is far from what you find in DT's drumming. His footwork is alright, but doesn't stand out as impressive. He knows his metal, but he seems like a boy scout in the world of progressive drummers.

Not that I believe this, but:

Quote
On December 9, 2010, it was announced that Mike joined the progressive-metal group, Dream Theater.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Mangini

And looking at the history, it looks like there have a few people trying to change it lately.

It's very possible that Mangini joined DT. But not because of any of the sources listed here so far.

Stating the obvious: Wikipedia is probably the least reliable source when it comes to speculation, because every wannabe-funny (or whatever) person and his dog can change stuff there.

I just really hope that DT sort out everything necessary concerning the new drummer so that they can announce him. It just shouldn't happen in the middle of the night.

Mangini just makes so much sense. Right age, ridiculous skill, is from the east coast, and he teaches at Berklee. It all fits so well.

Priester seems ok. Not great, but ok. CJS promised us they had auditioned seven "world class" drummers (I think that was the quote...). Priester does not seem to be world class to me.  Mangini, Lang, Donati, Minneman, Zonder, Portnoy, world class without a doubt.

According to the very unreliable Blabbermouth, they have picked a new drummer. Now, they're just preparing for the announcement.

As unreliable Blabbermouth usually is, being that the site is run by Roadrunner and DT is signed with RR, it say its safe to say the decision has been made...NOW JUST ANNOUNCE IT  >:(

Dream Theater did a song called Raw Dog for the God of War compagnion CD not so long ago. Rina talked about a "dog", I added "raw". That's funny because it makes "Raw Dog", which is the name of the previously mentionned song. I thought it had an element of surprise and joyful exuberance that kids have sometimes when they see the beautiful colors of summer for the first time through the eyes of innocence.

Yeah...but when I said "Raw God" instead of "Raw Dog", it was actually part of was triple four-parts joke that is currently at stage 2. There is a big pun coming in 2 weeks related to that.

Something about a movie about dreams I think. Maybe he meant it's playing in the theaters right now. I don't know, he didn't go deeper.
