Why does the new drummer have to be a singer? I mean, do we actually want to hear any more vocals coming from the drummer? I'd love it if the new drummer kept his mouth shut  at all  times during the song.

This is true. No singing neccessary as long as his drumming is awesome.

But how will they do any MP-era songs with his vocals live, if the new drummer can't sing?  Petrucci certainly can't handle all MP's parts.

I actually gave that a lot of thought. And I figure for songs where Portnoy was just adding in some random harmonies, then they can just do without it. However I came up with a really inventive way to deal with the songs that feature Portnoy singing leadish vocals.

They don't play them.

Ah now I understand. Thanks for clearing that up.
I guess there are four possible solutions:
1) Drummer who sings-- good for live shows, but hopefully he doesn't do so in the studio
2) Petrucci sings-- very doubtful; bad vocal abilities, and we wouldn't want it to detract from his playing
3) Rudess patches the vocal parts of MP for live shows-- Also doubtful: DT shouldn't play Portnoy's voice during a live show in this post-MP era
4) Labrie fills in-- my favorite option; I can see him doing trade-offs with himself during live shows. It wouldn't be too bad

EDIT: or what Adami just said. But, we should be aware that that would preclude DT from playing Glass Prison  :-\

Yes, we'd lose the Glass Prison, but we'd also lose like every one of their horrible songs.

Yeah, I don't see why they don't.  Either that or the new drummer can probably hit the lower register.

Well naturally, as someone with perfect pitch, he can sing. But the timbre of his voice doesn't match up well with MP's lyrics. He could always use this thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaliEHcRWvI&feature=related

MP actually did get better with backup singing as the years went by.  I wish they'd let James do all the vocals unless James suggested that Mike sing it (which he did at some points), but if the new drummer had a decent voice I'd be okay with them doing live backup vocals, or they could give Rudess another thing to do on stage.  I mean, JP isn't the greatest singer in the world, they need SOMEONE else to do a bit of backup of they do backup vocals at all.

Maybe Labrie can record them and have them piped in while he is singing live.  That way it will be all James and the band can just play to a click track.

Or simply dont play them.  They have plenty of songs.  Maybe they could dig deeper into the vault and play more songs that they havent really highlighted before.

I consider this to be a small problem.  Making good new music is the most important thing IMO.

Petrucci IMO has an outstanding vocal quality.  Speaking from the profession myself, any choir director would be lucky to have someone with a voice like his in their group.  (Splent can back me up???)  But MP's parts were either too high (in falsetto) or too frequent for JP to always sing them.

DT should not use patches of MP's voice... I can't imagine Mike being too happy with that solution.  And the call-and-response nature of some of the vocals would preclude JLB from singing both parts.

The only solutions in my mind would be to find a drummer who sings, use Rudess to sing, or stop playing any and all songs with MP vox.  I find the first two feasible options and the latter outrageous.  Mike's harmony vocals are essential to lots of DT's catalog, and his call-and-response style has been pretty important in their more recent recordings.  They can't just discard that.

But maybe I'm completely wrong.

A thought occurs.  The following sings have vocal melodies where MP's vocals have been crucial to executing them:

The Glass Prison
War Inside My Head
The Test That Stumped Them All
This Dying Soul
Octavarium Full Circle Section
ITPOE Part 1 (the spoken stuff under the end, which I don't even know if MP did live)
Constant Motion
The Dark Eternal Night (maybe)
Prophets of War (The spoken section)
ITPOE Part 2 (Slaughter of the Damned)
A Nightmare to Remember
The Shattered Fortress (I think we can assume this)
The Count of Tuscany (sorta)

It's not that long of a list.  And start thinking about how many of MP's vocals in these songs could just be removed (TCOT) or replaced with something different (ANTR) and you don't loose much of the DT catalog.  In fact, I'd say the only songs that flat out don't work without MP's voice are:

The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
Constant Motion
The Shattered Fortress

That's four songs.  With everything else, JP and JR could carry the vocals.  You could get creative and have Rudess do things with the VP-550 to fill space in different ways.

It would be cool if they got a new drummer in the band with a harder voice.  While I didn't always like how MP executed his vocals, in theory I liked the contrast he created with JLB.  But if that doesn't happen, the live shows will survive.

I'd like to hear some proper vocoder. Massive robot harmonies would be lush. Don't know if his hands would be too full, but if not then fantastic.

It'd sound ace in Octavarium. "Spinning round and rooooooound..."

Also, for a lot of the songs people are listing, just because portnoy sings WITH LaBrie all the time, doesn't mean he's necessary. Portnoys parts are only necessary when he's the only one doing them.

About those MP backing vocals, DT could do like Kamelot does live and bring some back-up singers, that way quality background vocals will be no problem, if Kamelot can afford to bring these singers on tour, I'm sure DT could too.

The only thing is I personally don't dig these background singers being on stage with the band... It doesn't seem that "metal"
