Nightmare to Remember, and The Spirit Carries On."

Guys, I heard from a source VERY close to the band that Mike told them he wanted back in, and the guys said OK, but after reading comments on the websites they're not sure how to drop the news on the fans. None of them really want to right now, so they've agreed to go onto hiatus while they think up the perfect PR statement to explain everything with.

Not buying this.  If it happened, I'd be kinda sad.

Then why would every DT member say at every public place that they can't reveal the new drummer yet. Yet. As in: they'll reveal the new drummer in a while.

That's what I think.

I posted about this somewhere else.  MP's departure and the new drummer joining create a large amount of legal and financial issues.  The new drummer might be in a current band he'll have to leave, creating more legal and financial issues.  Also, RR probably wants the announcement of the drummer to be a legitimate media event, which means setting up interviews and photo shoots.

Yeah I understand, but that wouldn't be neccesary if MP would come back, like PC said.

Dudes, hate to break it to you, but MP's not coming back for this one.  :\

Charlie Z's post means that he is either the new drummer of Dream Theater, or is really taking advantage of knowing the auditioned songs. If it's him taking advantage of the situation for popularity, he may not even have even auditioned and just knew the songs... (based on his wording in the second post)

Seems like I'm agreeing with a lot of people on that fact that Charlie seems more like the 'hired gun' choice among the other names involved. A guy the band may push away if needed (like DS).

I'm honestly pretty relieved Charlie didn't even audition. He is just not on the same level as the other names that have been dropped...but...

Have we heard even one bonafide candidate yet? (besides stevetheater's list). Stevetheater seems well-regarded around here, and I'm sure a few of those names are correct, but I'm really thinking at least Wildoer was not among the drummers auditioning.

I'm pretty sure PC was joking about the MP coming back thing.  After all those joke posts why is that one being taken so seriously?

All i can say is that if Virgil Donati did indeed try out, it probably would have been DT trying to keep up with him.

My bet is on virgil purely for the fact that he is the only drummer on the list that would make DT seem like it never missed a beat switching between two drummers!

For those that arent convinced, all i can say is....

No. Vadrum rather seems to be a solo person than a band person. Besides, I doubt that he would fit in terms of style (drumming to the SMB theme is impressive, but coming up with something on his own? What do we know about that?).

Am going to see Virgil at a clinic next Monday. Am going to try and ask him if he in fact auditioned and who else auditioned (that is if the opportunity arises). I think someone here said that he did but didn't get the part. Should be awesome seeing him play anyway  :metal

Just go to his site and you will see he will release an album of classical pieces he plays drums on. The extract I saw I found very good.

I said early on in the thread that Vadum (Andrea Vadrucci) would be perfect. He even covers DT. The fact that he can come up with crazy cool shit for cell phone ringtones makes me think that writing would not be an issue.

I kinda doubt that. Donati would obviously influence their style, but probably not quite to that degree.

So,from the information that we have now (reliable or unreliable) we have:
Peter Wildoer out,
Mark Zonder out,
Charlie Zeleny out,
Virgil Donati out.

So the list gets shorter by the day..

I think Lang could do a great job, especially on the metal/technical side of things, I think on this video his drumming gives a lot of energy to an otherwise boring piece of music, he also does some crazy stuff with different samples on pedals half way through:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmWzI6wEDXY&feature=youtube_gdata_player

My only concern is if he could nail the softer parts of their music well, though he may be good in that area, I've just not seen him do that style yet.

Edit: I also hope if he gets in he always uses an acoustic kit rather than an electric on like in the above video.

Well, if Donati, auditioned and didn't get the gig, I guess DT are aiming real high or are really focused in what they are looking for... So, with Donati out of the race, I would narrow it down to Minnemann, Mangini and Lang.

Like I've stated before, my money is still on Lang, I think he is the "whole package" Lot's of Drumming awards, touring experience, same age group, he's great and very charismatic with the fans and the media and would definitely raise the bar drumming wise in DT.

But at this point, if it's any of these 3, I would be extremely happy!

It's just based on a fan comment:

"I asked Virgil 'Have many people asked you if you'll be playing in Dream Theater', and he said a lot have asked, he did audition but didn't get in - but they have apparently chosen someone, so it's only a matter of time before we know now!"

Pierced, I agree with you, and yes I'm sure he would be able to do the soft stuff.

The only thing I don't agree with you on is the electronic kit. One thing I would really like to hear DT experiment with is electronic drums and drum triggered samples (in addition to JR's). I always thought MP simply wasn't as technical or savvy enough to use (additional) electronic drums as someone like say Neil Peart. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying go all electronic, but I think a mix is pretty cool.

On that note...dudes, has anyone seen this Lang video yet!?
