What other bands should I check out?
« on: October 26, 2010, 08:16:35 PM »
Having just gotten into progressive metal this year, I'm curious to see what other bands I can add to my collection.
Favourite DT albums (in case it helps):
Awake, Images and Words, Scenes from A Memory (in that order)
Other bands I like: (bands in red are new additions)
Iron Maiden
Muse
Theocracy
Radiohead
Porcupine Tree
Symphony X
Rush
(although I still can't stand Geddy Lee's voice)
Linkin Park (HT era)
Paramore   again

DTF, here's your chance to help out someone new to prog.
Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Why do previews not work in Google Chrome?
EDIT2: I prefer clean lyrics, not something like SATAN IS MY SAVIOR!!!!eleventyone!!1!!!

Opeth. Takes a while to get into the growls, but in the meantime there is a lot of clean stuff to try out.

While I'm not as much of a proghead as I used to be, these are the most prog bands I listen to that you haven't already listed, OP

Devin Townsend
Opeth
Tool
The Mars Volta
Coheed and Cambria
Cynic
The Dear Hunter
Riverside
Frost*
Pure Reason Revolution (After the first album, which is very floydian, they go in a more electronic direction.  Hope you like it!)
Yes/Genesis/Pink Floyd

Redemption is actually a good choice if you're just getting into more prog metal.  There are lots of bad prog metal bands out there, but Redemption is not one of them.  Lots of other forumers will recommend Pain of Salvation and I think I'd agree (listened to Remedy Lane again today, every song except "Fandango" was good).

Demians
Frost*
Beardfish
Haken
OSI

And get used to growling and then you can listen to

Opeth
Protest the Hero
Dark Tranquillity
Between the Buried and Me
Devin Townsend
Gojira
Mastodon
Orphaned Land
SikTh
Kalisia
Amorphis
Agalloch
Unexpect

+ 1000000 points for recommending SikTh.  Easily the most original metal band out of England.

It's not accurate anymore and about a year old, but anything there is still good.

All that work and it's already less than satisfactory? :lol

Opinions change, new things to be added (that was before I discovered Redemption)...it happens.  Other than adding some Redemption, top 20 is still pretty solid.

Redemption
Seventh Wonder
Darkwater

Obligatory Alter Bridge mention... they're not prog, they're just awesome

also maybe:
Kamelot
Tool
Opeth (not a big fan but if you like Porcupine Tree)
Avenged Sevenfold (will get bashed for this but honestly I think given your tastes they are a good bet. Try City Of Evil).

If you like Porcupine Tree and the likes, definately check out Karnivool. They are doing exactly what Oceansize are trying to do. And they're sounding good, unlike Oceansize.

This. Although, I've never listened to Oceansize myself. Karnivool is fantastic though.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

This. Even though Karnivool is a great band, there isn't really any competition.
Oceansize > all.

Eh, there's some great stuff out there that uses harsh vocals (And some of it doesn't even go down the satanic route, but if you wanna generalize...). But if you're insisting on only clean vocals....

The Lord Weird Slough Feg (Straight-up, no frills, traditional heavy metal with a more contemporary sound)
Hammers of Misfortune (Prog Metal Supergroup that is <3 )
King Crimson (Seriously, why don't you have it?)
Manilla Road (Awesome heavy metal, no questions asked)
Psychotic Waltz (Again, awesome prog metal)
Megadeth (Not sure how big on thrash you are, but this is the best starting point along with metallica)
Thin Lizzy (Not really metal, but hugely influential to metal and Iron Maiden consider them to be one of their biggest influences ;) )
Every time someone brings up "Never Enough", the terrorists win.

This.

And also, Metallica (or James Hetfield, at least) cites Thin Lizzy as their biggest influence along with Black Sabbath.

Transatlantic is a side project with Mike Portnoy.  Almost all their songs are epics.  If you want awesome prog, check it out.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges
