Again, really sorry this took so long. Life gets in the way sometimes.
Round 5 - Solo Showcase
5 Points - Gorille: Caravan Palace, “Suzy”So, Gorille. You changed your song twice but I like this one better than the other two. I figured since you’re in last I would cut you a break
Anway, this song is great. It’s what I would imagine might come out if a gypsy jazz tune and a pop song had raunchy, unprotected sex. The instrumentation in this one is
fantastic, as well. I love the call and response section between the violin and the guitar. I can’t believe you replaced this. Twice. It’s awesome!
4 Points - Kev – Nils Lofgren, “Black Books”Mother of God, what a great solo! I always find it impressive when soloists manage to keep it interesting for over a minute. I really dig Lofgren’s tone as well, the little bit of delay and reverb he uses really fills out the piece. Sounds like there’s a slight chorus effect too but I could be imagining things. Anyway, it doesn’t really matter. This is fantastic.
4 Points - Rich: Freak Kitchen, “Broken Food”I really like the pop sensibilities in this track. “I Was Raised on Broken Food” is a great hook, and the harmonies in the choruses are very nice It sounds a bit “90s,” but honestly it just makes me nostalgic about my childhood
I also like the bluesy guitar flourishes throughout the song. The solo is tasteful, though the out-note at the beginning bugs the hell out of me
3 Points - Soundscape: Apes & Androids, “Riverside”Leave it to you to consistently send me great music from bands that I haven’t even heard of. The chord progression is a bit strange, but I quite like it. Also, I think the band uses electronic sounds really well in an otherwise very earthy, organic-sounding song. There’s so much going on in this song, but I’m never overwhelmed by any of it. It just feels natural, which is excellent. And you’re right, the Brian May harmonies in the solo are very cool! The second 4 slot was between yours and Rich's and it really was a toss-up.
3 Points - SDN: Genesis, “Firth of Fifth”Congrats on submitting the first long song I actually like a decent amount. There’s a LOT of cool stuff going on here, and unlike a lot of long songs I hear, I can tell why this one’s a bit lengthy. I’ve tended to shy away from prog recently but this song hit me in a good way! I thought the piano work in particular was excellent.
3 Points - Fanica: Bjork, “Venus as a Boy”Hey, Bjork, thanks for singing a song I like, I appreciate it! Like I said in an earlier round, I love how fragile her voice sounds. It’s quite unique sounding and it’s not always pretty but I think that’s what I like about it. Life isn’t perfect. There’s a lot of cool stuff going on in this song – the percussion is super interesting and the strings give it a romantic quality that I like. This song makes me want to explore Bjork more.
2 Points - Sigz: Agalloch, “I am the Wooden Doors” Cool acoustic break, bro. No, seriously, cool! I thought the song was a bit long, and I wasn’t a huge fan of the production, but I liked it better than I thought it would. The growls were pretty inoffensive, which is a big deal for me since I don’t listen to much music with ‘em.
2 Points - Ryan: In Flames, “Zombie Inc”So this isn’t really my thing. I wouldn’t say I disliked it, though and I thought the solo was pretty good! Ya just got beat by a bunch of songs I happened to like better. Such is the nature of this game.
1 Point - SBB: Sikth, “In This Light”This song was OK, it just felt rather pedestrian to me. Nothing really stood out. I thought the solo had some cool ideas, though, and I liked the tight harmonization in it.

Final Round (6): Open, just don't send me anything over seven minutes
Edit: I'm thinking for the last round I'm gonna rate each song out of ten. That way, we end with a bit of fun, everyone's in the running, and the rankings will fluctuate.
