Okay. Round FOUR results! Sorry again for the delay, I suck wangs, take it in the butt, eyes, ears, nose, etc. I know.

I don't know if it was the songs themselves or the fact that this week has completely wiped me out, but I didn't really have much to say about some of 'em.

5 Points: Kev – Arcade Fire – Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
Damn, you’re good at this. In your PM to me you said the song was “awesome enough to listen to over and over and over” and man, you’re right. I must’ve listened to it five times today. There is so much cool stuff going on in the background of this song that I love. The groove of the drums/bass with all the synth work layered on top creates such a nice sound…It feels like I’m floating on a cloud of beautiful noise when I listen to this. I’m really not sure what it is, but Sprawl II is one of those songs that trigger the “feel-good-nostalgia button” in my brain. Surprisingly, the key change works really well, too. This might be my favorite song of the whole roulette thus far. It’s definitely gotten me to play The Suburbs, which I’ve had since it was released but never got around to.

4 Points: SoundscapeMN – Emanuel & The Fear – Jimmie’s Song
I’ve gotten a lot of great choruses this round – Jimmie’s Song has one of the best of the bunch, I think. The strings and horns are great here too. I’d like an album recommendation.

4 Points: Rich – The Cat Empire – Feeling’s Gone
I think the best part about this song is the instrumentation. The organ and the horns are especially great. And the turntable scratching :lol And you’re right, the chorus is super catchy.

3 Points: Sneakyblueberry – Kings of Leon – Pyro
I’m glad you sent me a Kings of Leon song. They’re a band I’ve been meaning to check out for over a year but never really got around to. Although it became a bit overplayed, I really enjoyed last year’s hit, “Use Somebody.” So. Pyro. I like it! You’re right, the chorus is catchy as all hell – I love the vocal harmonies. Overall, it’s a pretty understated song. There’s not too much going on, which gives everything space to breathe. It’s nice.

3 Points: Sigz – Julie Christmas – July 1st
Wow. Listening to this was intense. I liked it fairly much; I think Julie Christmas (is that her real name? If so, she wins) has a really interesting voice. Very expressive. I would be interested in checking out more of her.  I couldn’t find much information when I looked her up, what’s her deal?

3 Points:  Fanörk – Yakuza Heart Attack – Bionic Boiz
This is one of my favorite chip songs so far. It’s really playful and fun. Last 30 seconds or so are awesome.

2 Points: Gorille – Pendulum – Watercolour
So I would have never expected to get a song like this from you given your other submissions! A dance track! So I thought it was a good bit of fun, but unfortunately that’s kinda all it was for me. The other subs were too good for me to put this any higher, even though I had that simple keyboard riff in my head all day today :lol

2 Points: Letters – Haken – Streams
There was so much potential here! I LOVED the first five minutes of this tune. Like really loved. It’s has beautiful melodies, it’s really uplifting and the singer has a great voice.  Unfortunately, the rest of the song never, in my mind, lives up to the first part. I don’t hate growling, but it just doesn’t work for me here. I wish I could give it a better score, but I can’t ignore the minutes of the song I didn’t really enjoy. However, I want to explore this band more. Let me know what album you think I would like.

1 Point: SDN – Iron Maiden – The Talisman
Yikes mate. Didn’t dig this one. I don’t dislike Maiden, and I think their popular songs are really good but I’ve never really been able to get into their “deep cuts.” I’ll probably get a lot of flak for this but it sounds a bit samey to me. But anyway, in this track, Dickinson’s voice really bothered me for some reason, it sounded like he was straining a bit. It probably wouldn’t be ranked this low if it wasn’t so long, but as it stands I had to sit through ten minutes of music I didn’t really like as opposed to 3-5 like usual.

Leaderboard:
Kev - 16 Points
Fanörk - 15 Points
Rich - 13 Points
SDN - 12 Points
Soundscape - 12 Points
SBB - 12 Points
Sigz - 11 Points
Letters - 11 Points
Gorille - 8 Points

(I hope this is correct. I re-calculated it)

Round 5. Send me a song with an awesome solo in it. I don't care what instrument it is. My ranking will be based on the song as a whole, so don't send me a cool solo surrounded by shit.

Awesome, glad you liked The Cat Empire! Their stuff is seriously varied, definitely worth checking out though, it's great music. :)

Interesting that someone sent you a Haken song, their debut album Aquarius is one of my favourite releases of the year (although I know half the band personally so I'm possibly slightly biased) but I wasn't sure if it was something you'd like, as it's sort of epic, quirky, jazzy prog metal. Glad you liked the song though, it's far from one of my favourites on the album so you should definitely check it out (on Grooveshark: https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/artist/Haken/1508788). The album has almost no growling, just that short section in Streams and an even shorter one in the opening track.

I've actually known about The Cat Empire for many years but never really checked them out. I see Cat Power cds a lot at Cheapo in town here and often hope/think it's The Cat Empire instead.

As for Emanuel & the Fear - Jimme's Song, I'm both glad and relieved to learn you enjoyed that as I probably still consider it my favorite/the best song of 2010. If they weren't so obscure, it would do rather well on the radio. But it's a bit like The Dear Hunter; they are in a way almost too good to find themselves blow up like their talent would allow.

They only have 1 full-length record titled "Listen" and 1 EP. I'll tell you, there are some really good tracks on the record, however, it almost was the tease-of-the-year for me as I thought it might have chance to be album of the year. It's 4-stars, but not a perfect album to me. I do think they have a lot of potential and word is their next album could come as early as next year.

Here's a couple of the other standout tracks from "Listen"

The Finale

I would be interested in checking out more of her.  I couldn’t find much information when I looked her up, what’s her deal?

She's one of my favorite singers, but she's not terribly well known I'm afraid (I have no idea if that's her real name or not also).

Her 'main' band is Made Out of Babies, which is a pretty aggressive noise-rock/sludge band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnmedj0fYTQ

She also was in Battle of Mice, who's only album Day of Nights has probably the best vocal work of any album I own: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDYfX5D_O_w

And she just released a solo album called The Bad Wife earlier this month; the song I sent you is the first track on that.

Though to be fair, "Valley of the Damned," "Through the Fire and Flames," and "Strike of the Ninja" are enjoyable songs.

Valley of the Damned isn't that bad of an album if you realize beforehand what you're listening to is really cheesy power metal. Too bad they decided to copy the same formula on every subsequent album though.
