Can Portrucci continue his run?

Portrucci:  Kauan - Valveuni

            vs

Wolfking:  Scar Symmetry - Ghost Prototype I

So, both of these were new to me, although I do recognize Scar Symmetry's name being bandied about DTF.  Kauan is a Russian two-piece outfit, musically I would say its a reminisint of early Riverside with more emphasis on piano...or at least this song.  It's very atmospheric (and I'm not just saying that because they used a sample from a thunderstorm at times) and melodic, a very nice song to listen to when relaxing, as the vocals have a soft and soothing tone.  I liked this song more with each successive listen, as the subtle details and sublime beauty get noticed with every successive listen.

Scar Symmetry...why is this new to me?  I like Gothenburg metal a lot, and from this song I know I've clearly missed the boat on this band.  Thankfully I can rent a speed boat.  Some of the best melodeath I've heard in a while.  If their other stuff sounds like this, I'm definately going to be checking them out and liking them.

However...something about that Kauan song just gets me right now, and it is also something I'm going to check out, and I'll probably have to go out of my way to check it out as well.  By the slimmest of margins, Portrucci is taking this round with his strongest submission to this point.

Portrucci vs Sigz is up next.  Can Portrucci continue his big run?

Awesome  :D That whole Kauan album is just so peaceful and enjoyable. Definitely one of my favourites from 2009.

Also, sent my next song. I have a feeling it's going to be a lot different to what Sigz sends  :corn

Yeah, that's a good one and I could easily see why you would enjoy that more, but Holographic really just clicked with me, brilliant album.  Symmetric in Design is killer aswell.  Let's not even talk about Dark Matter Dimensions.

I should make you two send me two more songs, but alas, I'm paid to make the tough decisions.

Portrucci:  Kraan - Sarah's Ritt Durch Den Schwarzwald

                          vs

Sigz:  Rosetta - Départe/Deneb

Portrucci's song is jazzy as groovy as fuck, I just want tap my foot with the beat and nod my head to the rhythm.  The fact that it is a live recording makes it all the more impressive, because if it weren't for the clapping at the end, I don't think I would have known.  It's just a fun piece of instrumental goodness smileing all over the place.

Sigz's (that sounds weird...Sigz's) song is interesting as fuck, it forces you to pay attention, but not in an annoying "nails on a chalkboard" way, more along the lines a good movie sucks you in and you can't turn it off.  It's two songs meant to be played simultaniously, although I have to admit I don't know if either one would stand up on their own.  One "song" is post-metal, and the other is ambient/noise/whathaveyou.  I didn't listen to the individual songs, but I think its fairly obvious which layers belong to which song.

I thoroughly enjoyed both songs, so I based my decision on one piece of speculation...if I had both albums in front of me, which one would I choose to listen to first based on these two songs.  I think 16 days a month I'd choose the Kraan album, and today is one of those 16 days.  This is in no way an indictment of your choice Sigz, I really enjoyed it.  I also want to thank you for the Intronaut you sent earlier, I picked that album up when I was down in Raleigh and I think I like the song Miasma more than the song you sent me.  In addition, Amesoeurs, Battle of Mice, Giant Squid, and Grayceon are all on my watch list I keep on my phone - or I'll order them online when I get a nice stash of cash again.

Portrucci...you got another bullet in the chamber?

wouldn't most Kraan be considered Classic Rock?

I've pretty much been of the belief, everything from the 60's and 70's (or earlier) was a no-go.

I also went back and reviewed the original rules, bands he'd heard of and even had my final selection nixed because he had the album and it wasn't listed in his one offs. I also reviewed all the submissions in each round.

choose wisely young grasshopper

though....the final song you're battling isn't that tough...just a favorite band of mine I'm trying to introduce him to.

Sorry if I wasn't clear.  I was only DQ'ing bands I was already very familiar with like Zep, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rainbow, DSOTM (the only PF album I knew well, which is why I accepted Ytse's PF song), The Eagles, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc...stuff you can find on a classic rock radio station basically.  I never heard of Kraan, or the other stuff from the 70s Portrucci has sent me.  I'm not apposed to old stuff, I was just trying to avoid a situation I had when I was in numbers roulette where about every round I was having multiple selections being rejected due to familiarity.  Your current song selections are fine, as is your switch.

I originally heard that album (the Rosetta one) as two seperate discs, and while they certainly hold their own, listening to it synced for the first time was absolutely mindblowing. I'm glad you enjoyed it, I wasn't sure how it would fly.

Portrucci: When Day Descends - A Fragile Disguise

                   vs

SoundscapeMN:  Ours - The Worst Things Beautiful

When Day Descends is an up-and-coming Austrailian band, and appearently you can get a lot of their music on their website, https://www.whendaydescends.com/site/discography, for free so its definately worth checking out.  I would describe their sound as rockish-prog.  It was definately worth checking out if that's your thing.  The Ours song just really got my attention about 30 seconds in.  It sounded so familiar, yet I don't know where I would have heard it before.  Then it hit me...it was like taking the instrumentation of dredg and combining that with a singer who can hit the high notes like dredg, but has a more rounded out, fuller tone in the lower to medium register.

The When Day Descends song was good, but it lacked bait on the hook.  I saw it dangling, but it never grabbed my attention and drew me in like the Ours song did, and still does even after a few listens.  Portrucci's big run ends here.

I have both of the songs for the final, but I will listen tomorrow so I can give both songs their proper due.

Good luck SoundscapeMN and YtseBitsySpider!

hey thanks. You certainly had a nice run Portucci. A run I'd question if I could have made myself. I kind of went in thinking I had to submit something big, and Ours, as some know, are one of my favorite bands of all-time. And Jimmy Gnecco is one of my favorite singers. So, I figured, if I was going to go down, I would go down with my guns blazing, and take what I would say is their best or most accessible song (although, "best" would be difficult to say, given I could have named at least 3 or 4 others).

The track I submitted for the final I would say is my favorite track from said artist, although like some others I've submitted in this, it's a great song on an even greater album. In others words, if DTVT digs it, hopefully he'll check out the record it comes from.

Thanks, and good luck. But you're right. This is about introducing NEW MUSIC to DTVT 1st and foremost.

I can't forget though, participating in two of these simultaneously, in retrospect, I would not have done. I've actually tried to avoid submitting the same artists in this and antigoon's just thinking the other might know said song later on.

Im surprised after doing so well in this one not to have been considered for any of the other upcoming ones. Though I guess that might a musical taste thing. DTVT seemed to dig alot of what I was sending.

Oh well.

Also, you're song is going up against  Ozric Tentacles - Coily
I had a about half a dozen Ozric songs I was gonna try and send him (their catalogue is extensive) but this one seemed to grove nice and hopefully doesn't scare him.

I think so...and maybe it will help him cut his Ozric teeth..but I think he's a tad too metal to really "get it". He'll enjoy it, but if the other track has some good metalish guitar hooks...I"m not sure Ozric will keep him interested. It's an acquired taste.

They always amaze with the amount of actual instruments being played. Yes there's a ton of synth work but wow....some really good musicians too.

Well, it's come down to this.

SoundscapeMN:  The Stiletto Formal - Sleeping Our Way to the Top

                    vs

YtseBitsySpider:  Ozric Tenticles - Coily

Sleeping Our Way to the Top...sounds like what a former co-worker of mine was trying to do.  Is this rap?  Lyrically this sounds like a mash-up of old school hip-hop, rap, and and 70's prog.  I feel like I should be drinking gin & juice and watching booty shaking while wearing horn-rimmed glasses and a pocket protector.  "Put your face down and ass up"  that sounds like a rap verse...actually quite a few of them do.  Musically, it starts off like its going to be prog, but then the keyboard/synth just gets too repetitive and in my face.  To be honest, I could really see a song like this catching on bigtime mainstream.  It's a hybrid of two styles but not proggy enough to push most people away.  I honestly don't know what to make of this song

Well, when I saw the name Coily, I kind of thought I knew what to expect musically because I have heard two OT songs before and to my knowledge they are an instrumental band (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but all three songs I've heard were instrumentals).  On top of that, the title itself, "Coily" immediately struck me as a Q-bert fan, so I thought it would be cool to have some Indian snake charming music in there...and at parts it sounded like it did!  It certainly lived up to the name "Coily" musically, as it sounded coily, serpentine, and mysterious, whil still having the elements I think people associate with OT, spaced out sound heavy with heavy phase distortion.  Since we don't endorse drug use at DTF, the clean way this song can be really enjoyed is you lie face down into a pillow and close your eyes, with your hands under the pillow to provide a little pressure to your eyes...you can "see" moving patterns of color.  It was a pretty cool trip.

It's been a fun journey, both with the acid trip this round and through all the rounds.  I've already picked up some of the bands that have been introduced to me here, I've looked for others and will continue to do so.  But this round - and the entire game go to YtseBitsySpider.  Well done by all of you

DTVT, do you think you'll be checking out more music from The Stiletto Formal? because I can tell you, that is my favorite track on their record "!Fiesta, Fiesta, Fiesta, Fiesta" and frequently mentioned as a favorite online (by their fans), but it's the only song with a rap.

I really can't say enough good things about that record. It's one of the most energetic and addictive albums I've heard in the last 10 years, as there's a very good reason I have it at a perfect 5-stars. They're prog, not hip-hop, but they brought in Murs do do a rap on that song, which honestly I think not only works extremely well, but is a pretty unique or even original way to combine rap with rock music.
