well shit...now I can't remember the title.

It's a Pagan's Mind song...with the interesting Dream Theater quirk.

The Prophecy of Pleiades??

My song will most likely come off as short compared to the other songs. :P

How short is yours?  I'm getting worried about the length of my song.

Mine is like 8 ½ minutes. :P
I don't really listen to much music with longer songs then around 10 minutes, because even though length can make a song good, it can also be negative.

I just tried to change for a much longer song...but I believe someone thought about that particular song before me.

I don't know if DTVT will accept that switch also...anyhoo!

Nope...Wolfking already sent me that song.

Wolfking, the fact that someone else wanted to send the same song probably bodes well for you.

Listening session tonight.  I might settle in for a second listen before I write up as well.

Sorry Gorille, as soon as DTVT said earlier in the thread that the song can be as long as 80 minutes, I knew exactly what I was sending, wether DTVT likes it or not, I'm happy with my choice no matter what score I get.

And yes, it is one of my favourite songs of all time, it is AMAZING!!

Sorry again.  :(

Cheers.  I know you won't get time for repeated listens, but for me it took about 3-4 to really start getting it, I love it.  Hopefully you like it.  I hope everyone checks it out when the results are in, no matter how it's ranked. It's an amazing piece of music.

Round 6 - Long Song

Sorry for the short write-ups, they were done ex post facto as I was grading when I did both listens (yes, I listened to everything twice).  Also, Seventh Son hasn't logged on since Nov. 21, so he's eliminated.  For the most part I really enjoyed all the songs I was sent, some just more than others.

6 points
Sigz - Grayceon - Still the Desert - Heavy, unique,  :tup

5 points
Wolfking - Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness - Proggy goodness all around
Gorille85 - UneXpect - In Velvet Coffins We Slept - Heavy and unique as well, vocals will take some time to adjusting to but musically very interesting.

4 points
YtseBitsySpider - Pagan's Mind - The Prophecy of the Pleiades - This was the first song I listened to...my only note on it was that I enjoyed it as much as...
SoundscapeMN - Kaddisfly - Day Disappears with the Absence of Night (tied w/ Pagan) - ...which is to say I enjoyed it, although I remember Kaddisfly being on the lighter side of things (nothing wrong with that at all)

3 points
Portrucci -Moonsorrow - Karhunkynsi - Vocals were the only thing keeping me from really digging this, but I'm nowhere near writing this band off.
Zantera - Oceansize - Music for a Nurse - I thought I heard some Pink Floyd and Radiohead influences.  I think I'd like to hear more from this band at some point.

After 6 rounds:

YtseBitsySpider - 29
SoundscapeMN - 28
Sigz - 27
Wolfking - 22
Portrucci- 20
Zantera - 20
Gorille85 - 19
Seventh Son - DEAD

PLAYOFFS:

All rounds are open.  Below are some instructions.

Ytse, as the top seed, send me your song choice.  No one else can use it, it will be your song in the finals
SoundscapeMN - send me two songs.  One will be for the semis, and one for the finals (should you win the semi-final)  You can decide later which song you want to use first if you want.
Everyone else:  When you are in a round, send me a song.  Better of the two songs moves on.  Will have writeups.  This can move much faster than previous rounds.

Zantera wins tiebreaker over Portrucci since they tied in round 6, and Zantera scored higher in round 5 (I posted tiebreakers a while back).

Gorille85 has been coming on strong.  It's Gorille85 vs Portrucci.  Portrucci already sent in his first song, so all I need is yours Gorille85.  Also, I need the protected songs from Ytse and SoundscapeMN.

you should listen to more Oceansize if Music for a Nurse is the 1st exposure to them. I would say the same about Kaddisfly too, especially since you apparently enjoyed the tune I sent you.

2 songs? hmm..okay.

Correct, you have the winner.  And be ready, I have both of their songs and Soundscape's protected songs, so all I'm waiting on is Ytse's protected song.  My goal during the playoffs is to do one match a day, because its easy to listen to two songs a couple of times each on one night, which also allows me to finish well ahead of the x-mas holiday.

Matchup:

Portrucci:  McChurch Soundroom - What Are You Doin'?

                    vs.

Gorille85:  Karkwa - Echaupper au Sort (google translation: Escape the Fate)

Very contrasting styles, yet both are enjoyable.  The McChurch Soundroom sound is like a journey...its changing, evolving, and you don't know where you're going next.  Karkwa's song is more like a story telling...the only problem is je ne comprends pas le français.  Although I was leaning ever so slightly one way the entire time, I listened to each song 5 times and the winning margin got slimmer and slimmer everytime until the last listen...

McChurch Soundroom opens with an organ piece, moves onto a cool jazzy baseline, and settles into a Bigelf sound, mindyou 30+ years before Bigelf existed.  Then it sounds like he's singing some version of the verse from "Roxanne" by The Police despite the fact that this predates Roxanne by about 10 years.  I love the big sound during the chorus as well.  Imagine Black Sabbath with an organ, and less "doomy".

Karkwa reminds me of a dredg meets Radiohead meets PT's In Absentia...in all the good ways.  It's catchy and not too "pop-y", got a nice lead on the chorus.  I didn't watch the video until I made my decision, but if you a fan of rotoscoping (like I am), definately check it out.  Hell, check out both songs, they're both good.

These songs got closer and closer to each other until the 5th listen, when McChurch Soundroom just clicked for me.  The Karkwa song being in French didn't bother me at all, and the lyrics to McChurch were nothing special either, so it was strictly about the music here.

McChurch Soundroom wins by split decision.

Good game Gorille, you really caught on towards the end.

Portrucci vs Zantera... I need your songs

yeah, you got winner, and that winner is Portrucci again!

Portrucci:  Diablo Swing Orchestra - Ricerca Dell'anima

                         vs.

Zantera:  Oceansize - Savant

I liked the Oceansize vocals more, and honestly that chick's voice was borderline annoying, but musically DSO sounded like 50s metal at times, which was pretty cool.  I didn't absolutely love either song, but I think I could either learn to like the female singers voice, or maybe its just this song it seems a little too overprocessed on.  Either way, verdict in and I'm sticking with it.

Can Loborey Loco end Portrucci's run?  We'll find out Friday night (out of town tomorrow night more than likely)
