  • What's your favorite planet? Mine's the Sun!
Objective:  To introduce me to new music (prog / prog metal / metal) that I like.

Format:  Will consist of 8 or 10 players.  Some players will be invited, remaining spots will be via application - NOT simply who asks to be in it first.  The first 6 rounds will be similar to previous roulettes, players amass points.  However, this will simply determine seeding for the finals.  It will be similar to a single elimination format, but higher seeds get both more byes, and protected songs.  The top seed gets an automatic pass to the final, the #2 seed is in the semi-final, #3 seed quarter-final, #4 seed gets a pass to the round before the quarterfinals, and the remaining lower seeds have to duke it out.  I will explain the "protected song" advantage later when it gets to that time.

Application:  I will be sending out invitations by PM.  Invited players are ones who have demonstated through their posting that they have similar tastes, and can send songs I'm not familiar with regularly.  Invited players do not need to apply, simply accept your invitation.  So you know what I like and also to show you the large number of bands I will not accept due to familiarity, I will be quoting myself from the "entire discography" thread from a few months ago.

Alphabetical order (as listed by iTunes), bands with only one or two albums excluded for brevity:

Agalloch
Amon Amarth
Arena
Avantasia
Ayreon
Between the Buried and Me
Bigelf
Bruce Dickenson
Cairo
Children of Bodom
Chroma Key
Circle II Circle
Devin Townsend/DTP
Dominici
Dream Theater
Enchant
Eternity X
Evergrey
Faith No More
Frost*
Gojira
Haggard
Henning Pauly/Frameshift/Chain
Iced Earth
Iron Maiden
James LaBrie/Mullmuzzler
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Liquid Tension Experiment (included because I have the special box set)
Marillion
Megadeth
Metallica (except for St. Anger, but I refuse to acknowledge it exists)
Nevermore
Nightwish
OSI
Pain of Salvation
Pantera
Peter Gabriel
Redemption
Rhapsody (of Fire)
Riverside
Rush
Shadow Gallery
Sonata Arctica
Strapping Young Lad
Superior
Suspyre
Symphony X
The Tangent
Therion
Threshold
Tiles
Tony MacAlpine
Tool (I think)
Transatlantic
Vanishing Point
Wuthering Heights

Bands I plan on completing:
Amorphis
Blind Guardian
dredg
Fates Warning
Mystery
Opeth (need first album)
Royal Hunt

You don't want to know how long that list would be if I included one and two album stuff.

Anything on that list...don't even think of sending, and that list isn't exhaustive of what I own.  Also, no classic rock.  I already know that stuff forwards and backwards.

To apply, PM me the names of at least 10 bands that you would consider sending during the game - not individual songs.  Feel free to send more than 10 if you would like, ands also feel free to justify your choices (you like band X, or the keyboard player also plays in this band you like, etc.)   Upon receiving your application, I will also look at your posting history, and make decisions based on the application and posting history.

Invites will be sent out by the end of the day.  I will be staggering mine with Antigoons so hopefully we can keep the grading days apart so our "dead times" don't coincide.

This.

Since I don't expect to be invited any time soon, I'll just have to hope that my application will be good enough :P

Hm. You seem to be doing more of a league format. Mine's gonna be WAY more casual and I assume it'll end far sooner than yours does. Maybe coordination isn't necessary?

Don't expect to get accepted though. DTVT, do me a big favor and at least send a message saying no rather than leave me hanging. I didn't expect you to anyways, I just thought I'd ask nicely.

It will be a few days until I start reviewing applications.  I don't want to say no, then come back and say yes, or regret taking someone early.  I will let everyone know either way though.

Wow DTVT, I see a lot of crucial bands missing.  :|

If I get accepted I'll be sure to change that!  :tup

Ok, thanks. I just don't know how fogey-like you are. I mean, is your niche prog because if it is, I could probably show you some classic classic stuff but I bet you would know it because you are just old enough to have lived with it...no offense.

I ammended the original post to also exclude classic rock.  I know that stuff to well, I just don't own most of it because I spent ages 8-19 listening to it back before iPods and the radio was the only choice in the car.

Wow DTVT, I see a lot of crucial bands missing.  :|

You may have missed these two tidbits then:

"You don't want to know how long that list would be if I included one and two album stuff."

and

"that list isn't exhaustive of what I own"

Apply and see what ya got.  Also, invitations have been sent, and even if they all accept, there are still places available.

But I was talking about things like a total lack of Black Sabbath and Judas Priest  :lol

But oh well, hopefully I make the grade!  :tup
Also, just remember, don't be surprised if a group of strippers come up to your house :neverusethis:

I know Sabbath and Priest, I just don't own all their albums.  They're classic IMO, been listening to them for ages.  That list was long enough, if I started listing everything I knew I'd get carpal tunnel.

Okay. I just sent my 10 band list based on what I didn't see on your list, since I don't know your exact taste. But anyway, hope it all works out in the end!

Yup, you're good Ytse.

I am still waiting to hear from 2 invitees, and then I can announce which applications I've chosen.  I'll probably announce the first round by the end of the week.

Isn't McDonalds running its Monopoly game now?

As it stands, 4 invitations have been accepted, waiting on the last one.  While I'd like to go to 10 players, it might be too unwieldy and may have to limit it to 8 players.  I might take similar applications and let them tag team to get more people involved without increasing my listening workload.

I was going to send you a pm but then I saw that you were looking for (prog) metal. I kinda drifted away from the genre, so I don't think I have anything to offer there.

In loose terms I'm looking for prog, doesn't have to be metal.  But I know I wouldn't enjoy things like electronica, ambient, house, country; and things that are too avant-garde have a very limited shelf life for me.  I'm not expecting to get Dream Theater clones every round.

I started on a short list again, but didn't get much further than post-rock and singer/songwriter-esque stuff (with 1 or 2 metal bands in between). If you want that kind of stuff, I'll send a list as application - but I thought it might be a wasted effort since it's quite a stretch away from everything you have listed.
