Ok, update:
Everything was wonderful through mid-Monday but unfortunately, Eric developed an intermittently rapid breathing pattern. That, paired with his lack of urination since birth, led the nurses to put him in the nursery instead of in the maternity suite with us. They weren't too worried yet because everything else with him was fine and he wasn't in any other respiratory distress. However, Tuesday morning, his breathing and kidney function had not improved and he was transferred to the NICU. We were sent home without him. To say it felt like being punched in the gut is an absolute understatement.
It is now Thursday evening and all of Eric's conditions have improved and are stable. All chest xrays were clear, a lumbar punture was clear, blood cultures were negative, he is finally peeing on a regular basis and his breathing is normal. With a little more good fortune, we hope to be able to bring him home for the first time tomorrow.
We've completely been through the ringer, from labor and delivery to the release and joy of seeing our son to the dejection and worry of seeing him to taken off to the NICU....we barely know which way is up.
Thanks everyone for the positive wishes. I hope the little guy comes home tomorrow. Here's a photo for your enjoyment:
