Am I the only one apprehensive in welcoming this "Indiscipline" user into the forum with open arms and bestowing upon him our undying love, worship, and adoration?  Does it not seem strange, that in these darkest of times on the forum, we encounter among us a man who so quickly sweeps us off our feet and makes us tremble at the eloquence in which he describes his first encounter with a masterpiece?

We must tread carefully.  Is this man who he says he is?  Perhaps he is genuine and merely wishes to amuse us while taking us on a journey that we all can relate to.  Or perhaps he is Mike Portnoy in disguise who, in a last ditch attempt, is trying to deceive us into accepting him with open arms again by re-awakening us to the time when we first fell in love with him.  Once he has our support, he can continue his plan to be but a keystroke away from taking over this forum and re-branding it as DTFU.org.

We must tread carefully indeed.

I think you could possibly be the only one who considers these to be 'dark times'. I (and probably others, judging by their posts) am excited and optimistic about DTs future.

And what's wrong with someone with a low post-count 'sweeping us off our feet'? All of us had to start somewhere. I'm sure quite a few of us are embarrassed by our first few posts now. It is strange, yes, but it's not wrong.

Great work so far, Indiscipline! Keep it up.  :tup

Tell you what, this round of Q&A deserves its own post.

The first two are obvious, I'm assuming the next two are Kiske and Adams. When I first heard I&W, I made the Helloween/Kiske connection. As for Kiske, for my money, there's still no one better.

You do assume right. I can concede no one is able to pull another Live in the UK. Vocally, really one for the ages

You forgot to add Steve Harris to your 'Three Ways Bass Crossroads' list.

Well, let Paul DiAnno come out of retirement and make me sweet sweet love if I dare to forget West Ham Steve. Never fret, he currently resides in the Amazing Creatures Who Actually Play Drums, Bass and Rhythm Guitar At Once wing, in company of Geezer, Flea, and Billy Gould. Deal?

It was me, I guess. I remember attempting this same thing a couple a years ago, but it ended up wrong. I mean MartyMacFly-Playing-JohnnyBGood-In-1955 kind of wrong. Anyway, forum crash destroyed every evidence.

I love you, guys. I've always thought people in internet message boards were all focking degenerates. I still think that, but I love you. So:

03. Take The Time

0:00 – 0:16 ”One dream, one soul. One prize, one goal ...” Sorry, couldn't help it.

0:16 – 0:32 It may be the lack of chromosomes speaking, but the only way I can describe this is Electric Executioner March.

0:32 – 1:02 And we've got a rocker! Meanwhile, somewhere in Canada …

“… … Hallo?”

“Hey there, mate. It's Geddy ...”

“What's up, pal?”

“Alex, please sit down.”

“What the ...”

“Please. Listen to this.”

“… … ...”

“Thought so. We're done, aren't we?”

“... Ehm … Does Neal know?

“You tell him.”

1:02 – 1:30 What have we learnt in 30 seconds? You can exploit samples as efficiently as Anthrax or funky grooves as sexily as Extreme without the need to stop the presses and cry Crossover to your heart content. Furthermore, James LaBrie can surf the odd meter like a prince.

1:30 – 1:42 Have you ever asked yourself what would happen if Parliament and Kansas started jamming together after a freebasing marathon?

1:42 – 2:05 All right. These people know way more than your average metal hero is supposed to know. These are, I dare say with my nipples turgid, Musicians. Drumming Dad, come home when you like. We're ready to rumble.

2:05 – 2:10 That wasn't a transition. That was a statement. A Robocop-JudgeDredd-Kurrgan kind of statement. Plus, two minutes in and I still can't fathom where the fock this song is going.

2:10 – 2:32 Ok, now I know. It's going places.

2:32 – 2:59 What a cavalcade. Plus, Freddie is dead, but we could have the next big thing in our hands. Too bad there's no time to elaborate.

2:59 – 3:24 Wait, same chorus. We have time. Let's take a stroll through Indiscipline Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Vocalists Hall Of Fame's last three floors:

Floor 10: The Sexy Beasts Lounge. On your right, busy in gruesome acts of groupie debauchery, you can spot the Classics: Gillian, Coverdale, Rodgers. They could sing it all, but would never shed that You-Are-So-Blowing-Me-Right-Now-Babe aura. On your left, smashing furnitures and pissing on the carpets, the Moderns: Cornell, Patton, Bach. Powerful and colourful, but won't ever let us forget that One-Of-These-Days-I'm-Gonna-Kill-You-Or-Myself attitude.

Floor 11: The Epic Storytellers Den. On your right, dressed as bondage Hobbits, you can spot the Classics: Dio, Anderson (Ian), Halford. Utterly mesmerising, but constantly faulted with the I-Am-So-Evil-And-Mysterious staple. On your left, playing Dungeons & Dragons, the Moderns: Dickinson, Adams, Kiske. Awe inspiring, but limited by the I-Am-Moses-Laying-Down-The-Law pose.

Floor 12: The All-Powerful-Without-Limitations-Of-Sort Loft. There, sitting on a throne, resides the Classic Queen. It may be a little soon, but I suspect she's waiting for the Modern Pirate King.

The point being? How I will manage to have an actual life when I grow up is beyond me.

3:24 – 3:46 Depeche Mode mood ... and it speaks Italian! The Material Mom is pure limey, but the Drumming Dad is all wop. I think I'm in love.

3:46 – 4:02 Somewhere in Canada a telephone keeps ringing … and ringing ...

4:02 – 4:33 Funny happy guitar build-up. Since we're here, the tone is quite unique. John Petrucci, please just give me another excuse to crank Indiscipline One Touch Immediately Recognisable Guitarists Pantheon open.

4:33 – 4:49 Sega Mega Drive Unison: Sonic in the temple of metal!

4:49 – 5:18 Sorry, Nuno. Really.

5:18 – 6:03 Switch Kevin Moore with Roddy Bottum, and Faith No More would be Favourite Band #5 instead of #11. I should start a Heavy Metal roto league.

6:03 – 6:30 Same chorus, another digression. These guys have an incredible chemistry. All gifted beyond belief yet everyone in his place. A kind of supernatural chemistry unheard of after 1975. Think Who, Zeps, Ozzy's Sabbath, Bruford's Yes, Queen.

6:30 – 7:12 Johnny, I warned you. You are so knocking on Indiscipline One Touch Immediately Recognisable Guitarists Pantheon's door. Waiting inside: Carlos, Fripp, David, Eddie, Vernon.

7:12 – 7:50 In a perfect world this would be the ultimate stadium anthem. In fact, in a perfect world I shouldn't even be here typing.

7:50 – 8:18 Joe, Steve, do you like Italian American Threesomes?

While Rush was light years ahead of their time, they really lost it somewhgere around 1983. When they tried to get it back in the 90's they were embarrassed by bands like Dream Theater. When I got I&W, I always said that THIS was the music that Rush should be making.

The Hip Version:
You thought I had died, didn't you? I did. Sobriety is a bitch. It can turn musicians to jokes or compel chiefs of state to obliterate exotic countries.

The Official Version:
After weeks of furiously busting my ass 24/7 for you, the fans, I needed a break from the vodka/running-diary/Q&A cycle which was burning me out.

The Truth Version:
Jobs have a way to interfere with pointless internet antics. Funny.

Anyway, I spare you the Q&A, mainly because half the readers who have submitted comments have probably died of age since my last entry. So, without further ado, because we still focking hate ado, let's take care of business.

04 Surrounded

0:00 – 0:19 “I was flicking through the channels on the TV ...”. Sorry, couldn't help it.

0:19 – 0:32 Airy, softy and soothing as fock. Such a vocal equivalent of rape drugs induces me to expect another slow ride. Of course, given this guys' level of predictability so far, this can go Slayer on me in a handful of seconds.

0:32 – 0:48No, it didn't. It went Neil Diamond.

0:48 – 1:23 If I had diabetes, I'd be rolling on the floor fighting for my life, the Material Mom would barge in with garlic and crucifix in tow trying to remove the Assirian demon  she has always known possessing me, and this whole commentary would be way more interesting.

1:23 – 1:48 I feel like I am witnessing the birth of a new genre: The Metal Calypso.

1:48 – 2:02 As representative of a lineage of air-drummers, I would like to mail Mr Mike  Portnoy a gift box full of faeces, with the following message: “When the fock am I supposed to beat my air-snare now, you drumming freak?”

2:02 – 2:57 This is so happy. Happy birthday happy. We can never have enough metal bands with an actual happy vibe to them. Now, my imaginary reader, ask yourself what makes Van Halen and Helloween so unique. Do it. Do it now.

Imaginary reader #1: The thought of Alex's and Eddie's sheer proficiency compels me to touch myself at night.

Imaginary reader #2: Hearing Ingo stomping the crap out of his double bass and Archangel Michael's call to arms makes me wish to unsheathe my willy and bring justice into this world.

Imaginary reader #3: You are my imaginary writer. Do your focking work by yourself.

Fine and dandy. But, maybe you want your music to bring a smile to your face. Maybe, just maybe, in a metal scene monopolised by the corpse-eaters from Florida and the wrist-slitters from Washington, you find yourself appreciating aggressive yet positive music. Maybe I should shut the fock up and go behead a chicken or something.

2:57 – 3:10 Wait a minute, let me understand how does it work. Drums and guitar interlocked, keys on the upbeat, and bass … well, the bass is constantly soloing from the moment I put on this beauty. For you, in my living room, the rhythmic section for the 90's.
Considering everything until today was foreshadowing a decade of Novoselic/Grohl, we can safely say I feel like Marcellus Wallace right after being rescued from Zack's basement, only 224 times more grateful.

3:10 – 3:39 Holy fock and iron lungs, James. Twenty seconds up there, with short breaths and crescent power, never “on the cords”, never faking it, never switching voices. In a word, the Anti Geoff Tate.

3:39 – 4:03 This gem needs the resident guitar expert's opinion because I honestly can't understand how it was played. A quick visit to Super Sloth Den, also known as my brother's bedroom.

The Banging Big Bro says: “Whoa. Dunno. A delay thing. Dunno. Whoa.”

Thank you very much, Leo Fender. God, sometimes I feel like Tom Cruise on Rain Man, only without the casino options and the looks. Anyway, this utterly elegant piece of solo I just heard  is something I'd expect from The Edge, if he actually were a guitar player and not just a focking genius of sound.

4:03 – 4:42 This Portnoy guy has just managed to dwarf the whole Ulrich opus, with a ballad. I still don't know what does this say about Mike Portnoy, but I sure as fock know what it says about Lars Ulrich.

4:42 – 5:25 What a classy way to end a side. Old school a and I dare say theatrical. In the age of Let's-Cram-A-Couple-Of-Singles-On-Top-And-Unleash-The-Filler-Brigade-With-No-Regard-To-The-Album-Flow, this first slice of images and words felt like a perfect coherent dramatic narration. It's demanding an intermission and legit expectations for the second act. This is huge. Floyd-Yes-King Crimson kind of huge.

This was definitely an important moment in my life, and as had always happened in such moments, dear reader, I had to go to the bathroom.
