The "gotta have" album on vinyl
« on: October 22, 2010, 09:17:48 PM »
I am kinda of a Vinyl newb... being just a kid in most eyes and what not (age 19)... but a just found a gold mine of used vinyl today... picked up Who's Next, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Heaven and Hell, In Through The Out Door, and (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd). I also have the 30th anniversary edition of DSotM, Animals, BC&SL, What Happens Next (Ill Repute. an album that i believe is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in punk) and a couple various local punk compilations.

What else do you guys think is a MUST HAVE on vinyl?  What do you think sounds better on vinyl that cd/mp3? what about must haves on cassette?

DISCUSS!

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

In my experience, these sound noticeably better on vinyl.

My Arms, Your Hearse-Opeth
Bruce Springsteen.  Any of it.
Crack the Skye-Mastodon
Thick as a Brick-Jethro Tull
A Farewell to Kings-Rush

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Boston - Boston
Yes - Close to the Edge

Albums that pretty much define a good vinyl listening experience.

I agree with The Wall, and anything by Zep. I'd also suggest

2112- Rush
Sgt. Peppers LHCB- Beatles
Exile on Main Street- Rolling Stones
Kiss Alive- Kiss
Frampton Comes Alive -Peter Frampton
Fragile- Yes
Thin Lizzy- Thin Lizzy

I found WYWH at Half Price Books for 8 bucks, it was amazing. I have an original 70's print of DSOTM that even comes with the posters, it's pretty great.

I'm just gonna throw it King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King

Anything classic rock. Yes, ELP, Tull, etc. There's really no need to buy a vinyl version any recent, digitally recorded album, but I'm sure some people like to anyway.

I seriously need Ghost Reveries on vinyl. That album just sounds like it needs to be on it. Damn shame it's impossible to find nowadays :(

Led Zeppelin II
Hemispheres
Moving Pictures
A Farewell to Kings
Fragile
Houses of the Holy

And probably a few more, but these get the most spins for me.

This isn't a very easy vinyl to find, is it?

My suggestions: Sgt. Pepper, Dark side of the moon, and Led Zeppelin IV. Those are essential.

Two sides of must haves on vinyl:

The classic repetoire:
Pink Floyd - Meddle   (just because Echoes is way warmer and fuller on vinyl)
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Rush - A Farewell to Kings
Rainbow - Rising
James Taylor - Best of

But also, the minimal kind of albums:
Brian Eno - Music for Airports
Sunn O))) - Domkirke    (that one is really really good on vinyl)
Bass Communion - Ghosts on Magnetic Tape

I know this is the unpopular opinion here, but if it wasn't originally released on Vinyl, you don't "gotta have it" that way.

Shouldn't be unpopular.  Should be a known fact.

I disagree. Music is not a matter of 0's and 1's, it's a known fact that vinyl sounds better.
So to me it's more like if you have a good stereo system and a good record player, you should get as most albums on vinyl as you can.

It doesn't sound better for music that was recorded digitally and then downgraded to analog.  It sounds better for music that was recorded analog.

Not that I'm a studio technician. But aren't most big studios still recording analog, and doing the processing (cutting, mixing, editing, mastering) digitally?
I heard that somewhere.

Does it matter? That's where the sound quality takes a hit, and it's not like anyone masters one version for digital, and another for an analog Vinyl release. Some people like listening to digitally recorded and mastered music on Vinyl. I don't understand why. Some people also like food that is advertised as having "REAL" artificial flavors." I don't understand that, either.

Good point.

Thing is, I don't know enough about it. But I know that I really adore the 180g red and blue marbled vinyl version of Sunn O)))'s Domkirke, and that in my ears that sounds a lot better than any other version I've heard of that record.

It'd a different kind of listening experience altogether. You get the cracks and pops. You get to change sides. You get to watch it spin. Etc. I actually have some recent albums that I enjoy listening to more on Vinyl, too, but nothing as drastic as listening to anything that was originally released on Vinyl is compared to its digital counterparts.

For me, I miss the big fold out when you opened a double album.

Kiss Alive II and that fold out picture burned a hole in my eyes as a 9 year old. I wanted to be them so much.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

four sides. four 20 minute+ epics. A lot of bang for your buck  :) Close to the best album of the 00's.
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.
