I'd love to see how the Black Clouds songs rank a year later. I still think TCOT will be high, though.

I suspect a top 10 this year would be fairly similar, although "The Count of Tuscany" probably wouldn't finish as high since it wouldn't have the newness factor that it had last year.  As much as many fans don't consider anything new by any band to be as good as the classic material, there are always fans who will consider something new that is really good to be better than it really is, IMO of course.  "The Count of Tuscany" is a good example, as is Rush fans actually thinking "Caravan" is one of their best songs ever.

Ugh since when is repeating "I can’t stop thinking big" over and over and over considered good to do in a song..

And, yes, I'll have to disagree with you in that there exists a perfect, objective top 10 that exists outside of what any individual thinks.  But there's not really a point in arguing about that.

What would such a list be based on?

You know, facts. I'll get DTF Labs to run some experiments.

Yes, very underrated.  Even if it were overrated, it would still be underrated.  That's how good of a song it is.

I'm not the final judge, of course, but let me give you an example.  I would rank CM higher than TMoLS simply because I get more out of CM.  However, TMoLS is obviously a better song.

My ranking of all DT songs:

https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=2118.msg59737#msg59737

(At the time, I did not include the BCSL songs because they were too new.  I inserted them now, but couldn't be bothered to renumber the entire list)

Top 10 for those who can't be bothered to click the link:
1.  Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
2.  A Change of Seasons
3.  Octavarium
4.  Metropolis - Part I "The Miracle And The Sleeper"
5.  Learning To Live
6.  Lines In The Sand
7.  Scarred
8.  The Mirror
9.  Home
10.  Trial Of Tears

However, TMoLS is obviously a better song.

Maybe and maybe not, but there simply is no objective way to arrive at that conclusion.

I agree that there is no way, or at least no way that we know of, but I believe it exists somewhere out of our reach.

Another good song, but that belongs on the Queensryche forums.

TAC, there is a difference between MY subjective top 10 and THE objective top 10.  I'd rather not say MY top 10 since I need to save that for the official thread; but THE top 10 probably looks like this:

Well I was wondering what you had so high to have Scarred so low. You know, as a point of reference that's all..
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I have been listening the Awake lately and a light went on while listening to Scarred. What a great freaking song. I always liked it, but its on a whole different level now for me.
Does this song get the love it deserves?

Yes, very underrated, top 10 DT song for me.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

I can't give you a detailed answer.  It just seems like a fundamental truth.  The fact that a song like ACoS is better than YNM is almost as obvious and clear to me as the fact that I have hands.

Underrated, a top 10 song for me.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Considering the immense love it gets, and my personal impressions of the song, I'd say its overrated.  Great singing from James and some pretty  :metal sections, but I never thought it was as great as lots of people make it out to be.

Great track. I think it kinda sits well where it is though. It's been played within the last ten years live, and its got it's fair share of supporters here.

No, Scarred is the most overrated song in DT's catalogue.

Scarred is my 2nd or 3rd favorite DT song. It's simply so... perfect! It has Kevin's possibly best solo and a great solo by Petrucci too. I don't have any problem with the transitions and fade-out. I wouldn't say it's underrated, as there are many people who love Scarred, but it definitely gets more hate than it deserves.

I don't know about under rated but it seems to get a lot of undue hate.

No, Scarred is the most overrated song in DT's catalogue.

Blob was wrong about a lot of things, this wasn't one of them.
It was certainly one of the most annoying things though. Every DT related thread seemed to be a Awake/Scarred bashing opportunity for him in his later days.

Scarred is awesome and gets too much hate, but what I really came in here to post was that Rime of the Ancient Mariner doesn't fade out.

Neither does "Close to the Edge," really. There's definitely a proper ending there. It just sounds like Scarred doesn't have a proper ending because the outro comes out of nowhere and has nothing to do with the rest of the song just like all the other parts come out of nowhere and have nothing to do with eachother.

Yeah, I don't get the hate for this song. Some people may not be crazy about it, but really, what's there to hate about? If you enjoy Awake, then you should enjoy this song too.

Personally, this is easily Top 10 material.

What version are you listening to? It clearly doesn't. The song ends with the Bruce singing "On and on and on..." as the musicians come to a halt and his voices echoes off.
