Animals as Leaders is pretty damn weird.

In what way?

A friend linked me one of their songs a while back, and the production really turned me off.

I love Animals as Leaders, but I understand a lot of people are turned off by Bulb's production. To each his own, I think it's a smart, cheap way to make a good sounding record.

Um, I'm pretty sure Bulb has nothing to do with Animals as Leaders, the guitarist is Tosin Abasi.

Misha (Bulb) produced the Animals as Leaders record and programmed all the drums, loops and synth on the record.

I'll recommend Anubis Gate's last two albums (Andromeda Unchained & A Perfect Forever). They are more Metal than Prog but i guess they qualify if Symphony X et al do.

Why do people keep listing Blind Guardian as prog

Well:

Blind Guardian = cheesy
Prog Metal =  cheesy

Therefore:

Blind Guardian = Prog Metal

that's way too simplistic of an approach though

I mean by that logic ac/dc would be prog metal

Listen, Jamesman already knows he's not getting a raise this year. We've been a little slow with research lately.

I'm bumping Fates Warning.  They are considered to be part of the holy trinity of prog-metal alongside Dream Theater and Queensryche, and are probably second only to DT as far as staying the course as a torchbearer group of the genre.  A must listen for any prog-metal fan.

Queensryche from 83-94 is also a must.  Anything after 94 is optional.

Also, Savatage fills an odd niche in the world of prog-metal  While most of their material from the 80's is pretty standard, albeit very good, old-school power metal, from 1989's Gutter Ballet album onward, they took a rather unique artistic path, blending 80's power metal with progressive, neo-classical, symphonic and most notably Broadway influences.  A truly amazing band, although definitely very left of field, even in a progressive genre.  I would highly recommend them, as well as the solo efforts of their singer/keyboardist/main songwriter, Jon Oliva.

And finally, any of the projects by Arjen Anthonny Lucassen (Ayreon, Star One, Guilt Machine, Ambeon, Stream of Passion).  Pretty diverse, but always with heavy doses of old school 70's prog-rock.  If you're into the retro sound, I would recommend them as well.

Orbs - They aren't really metal but if you like bands like Coheed and BTBAM (Dan Briggs) is in Orbs) I'm sure you'll like them.

Not totally metal but Gordian Knot.  Check out their album Emergent.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Going to throw one out here that qualifies as one of prog metal's greatest missed opportunities:

Power of Omens.

They did two CDs, Eyes of the Oracle and Rooms of Anguish, before coming apart in around 2004 or so. Their vocalist, Chris Salinas, went on to sing for Zero Hour, another right good prog metal band, but, MAN, are those two Power of Omens CDs unsung gems. Their music was more technical than a lot of prog metal (not quite the level of technical insanity of tech metal though), long, complex songs, great musicianship, amazing vocals. (Salinas is Geoff Tate on steroids.) I have no idea how these guys didn't wind up on Inside Out or some other prog metal label. I imagine their CDs aren't easy to find, I paid a fortune for the first one on ebay seven years ago, but man, this band needs to be heard. Especially Rooms of Anguish, it honestly was one of my top five prog metal CDs of the decade.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.
