Progressive Metal I've Missed
« on: October 17, 2010, 07:43:34 PM »
Just want to see if there is anything absolutely mandatory that I've overlooked. Here's what a really quick scan of my library brings up as progressive metal:

Akphaezya
Baroness
Between the Buried and Me
Castevet
Coheed and Cambria
Cynic
Devin Townsend
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Direwolf
Enslaved
Evergrey
Gladiator
Hacksaw to the Throat
Krallice
Iron Thrones
Mastodon
Opeth
Pain of Salvation
Spiral Architect
Symphony X
Unexpect
Urheimat

Anything important missing that deserves ridicule? Or recommendations in general?

Because he totally didn't list Devy in the OP.

Also if you are cool with thrash metal, Nevermore is a fantastic progressive metal band.

Have Mastodon (edited) and Nevermore down. Don't really consider Nevermore prog, but it's probably disputable against some of the stuff I did list.

Maybe it's just because I listen to a lot of it, but you're missing so much I hardly know where to start...

Shadow Gallery
Riverside
Redemption
Royal Hunt

That's a start.

Nevermore ISN'T prog, but they are progressive. Strangely enough, there is a difference. Progressive elements =/= prog.

Well yeah.  Prog bands don't progress.  They imitate other band's "progressions."  And I say this with only a few exceptions.

But if you're looking for standard Progressive Metal, I guess Seventh Wonder is a pretty nice band...

That's not what I was getting at all....

Yes = prog/proggy/porg/etc.
Nevermore - metal with progressive influences (primarily in the riff structures/time sigs/etc.)

Let's please not get into the prog vs. progressive debate again...
Also this. That's just my standing. Let's not take up the thread with bitching and moaning.

I'm not recommending Haken because I haven't heard them.  I'm not advocating against suggesting them either, and I don't think anyone else is either, so I'm not quite sure what you're trying to get at...

Alright, motherbitch. I come into threads like this just once in a blue moon, so take heed to these words.

The album "Unia" by Sonata Arctica.

It's an album so bold and different that it pretty much shook their fanbase irreparably. The second half of the album is particularly what I recommend.

I know my username is a homage to the band, but I made it years ago and I don't really even listen to them anymore. I would even say I dislike a good amount of their stuff.

But I can say without the shackles of fanboyism Unia has some of the greatest progressive metal that there is.

Oh, and if you can, get the bones track "They Follow". Sonata Arctica is a band that has a lot of bonus tracks that you hear and just think, "Wow, I see why that didn't make the album. It's shit." But They Follow is better than some of the earlier tracks on the album.

I guarantee you will not regret it.

I'm getting that everyone who's not recommending Haken and hasn't heard them has some homework to do. 'Cause frankly, they're amazing. And a lot more of a breath of fresh air than MANY prog metal bands I've heard recently.

Can you elaborate on this breath of fresh air they've got going on?  Because a LOT of prog metal sounds about the same, which is why the prog metal stuff I listen to ranges from DT to Opeth to Devy to Mastodon and all that stuff, while straying away from bands like Circus Maximus and Symphony X.  So if Haken is actually worth checking out, is there anything you can tell me that'll get me excited enough to find a song to listen to?  Or just song recommendations in general?

And, yes, the video is as good as the gif.

UH WAIT I mean the album is definitely as good as the trailer makes it sound.

Shadow Gallery
Riverside
Redemption
Royal Hunt

That's a start.

To that I'll add (for my perception of your heavier taste):

Agalloch
Amorphis (last three albums)
Blind Guardian
Nevermore
Orphaned Land
Therion
Threshold

For lighter prog:

Arena
Enchant
Marillion
Peter Gabriel
Tiles
Transatlantic

I'm not a huge fan, but they were one of the genre's pioneers, so I'd say they're pretty important for your list. And I'm surprised no one has mentioned them yet.
