Been a fan of Symphony X for a long time but just recently got into the other bands above.  I would have put in POS & Opeth but they are gaining a lot of popularity these days!

Honorable mentions:
Ark - Burn the Sun
Frameshift
Dragonforce - haha, just joking!

Out of those choices, it's Redemption, easily.

This.  Although Vanden Plas kicks ass and Symphony X is cool.  But this is far from an exhaustive list.

I would have put in POS

Seriously, what is so great about Pain of Salvation? I hear about them so much on this forum.

Symphony X by a country mile.  I love that band!  I must check out Redemption though, as I haven't heard any yet.  Can anyone recommend what I should listen to first?

I sort of like PoS, but I have to be in the right frame of mind - they're a little too morose for my usual tastes.  Mind you, people say the same about Evergrey, but I like much of their stuff... but I do hear that the last couple of albums are very very similar..... In Search of Truth was excellent though....

Hard choice between SX and Redemption.  I think I'll go with SX, just.

Theshold wouldn't be far behind those two.  Underrated prog band, if anyway doesn't know them, you should really check them out.

Another decent prog band that gets no recognition is Sieges Even.

Most of those bands get plenty of recognition. But out of those options I'd pick SX.

Now if we're talking about newly emerging prog bands my pick would have to go to Tetrafusion.

Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

None of them are particularly good, but I guess Redemption.

Not a fan of Symphony X or Redemption as all. Threshold is pretty good, but I hit other so I could say Cloudscape. :)

Symphony X gets a hell lot of recognition...and Redemption has a fairly large following around these parts as well.

Threshold has been around for 18 years, and I think the reason they aren't being discussed much is because it's been a while since they released an album coupled with the fact their most recent album is arguably their weakest effort.

And there is a large swathe of users here who will mock your love of Vanden Plas.  I'm not one of them, but poor Norwood got killed in his Vanden Plas thread.

Bitching about the thread title aside, I rank them Redemption first, Threshold & Sy X tied, and Vanden Plas last because I've never gotten into them.

Now, if you want to talk about criminally overlooked bands that do not have a lot of recognition, here's a list for you:

Arena
Royal Hunt
Enchant
Henning Pauly / Frameshift / Chain
Tiles

and that's just off the top of my head.

This.

Animals as Leaders for me.  Though they're less "prog" and more "progressive."

John Arch-era Fates Warning or Into the Woods... would have to take it. Not a fan of the other bands.

Absolutely love the band. Can't wait for the new album.

I haven't heard all their albums but Dead Reckoning was okay.  They went for a more modern approach and on some songs it worked, but IMO they lost a bit of their sound.  Although Pilot is one of their best songs.  But it doesn't have songs like Eat the Unicorn, Exposed, Mission Profile, Pressure, Oceanbound, Tension of Souls etc.

Extinct Instinct is one amazing album, and I much prefer Damian Wilson over Mac.  They are still a very underrated band.
