Decided to give these guys a try, and my initial impression is-hey, wow, a progressive metal band that has heard of Kansas! Really got a big time Kansas vibe off the start of "Streams." I kind of see what people are saying about the zany keyboard parts, but they do have a certain kind of charm. Thus far-and this is kind of weird for me, given my love of technical death metal-the only thing I don't really like are the death metal vocals. They just seem to wander in totally randomly, and don't add a lot to the song. Otherwise, liking these guys a lot, and maybe the death metal vocals will grow on me.

(edit): Ohh, that instrumental break in "Aquarium": GODLIKE.  :metal
That's interesting. Their "Death metal" vocals are one of the things I really like about Haken. For example in Streams at about 5:00 when the song turns really dark with the organ , I think the death metal vocals work very nicely.  The first time i heard that, I almost thought I was listening to mikael akerfeldt.

I really wouldn't mind the death metal vocal parts if they weren't, well, fairly poor death metal vocals.

Yeah, they're really not very good. And I agree with the previous poster that they seem to just wander in and out pretty randomly. Still the best progressive metal album in some time, though.

That was my primary problem with them, they weren't really all that good. The only blemish on an otherwise perfect progressive metal album. Can't wait to hear the next one.

I saw a live video of Point of No Return/Streams, and I was pleasantly surprised.  The death vocals on the album sounded like they were loaded with effects so I was a bit skeptical about them.  Hearing them done live was cool.

I'm looking forward to the new album :caffeine:

Yes! :tup

Not that I dislike all death vocals (I love Mikael Akerfeldt's), but I wasn't a fan of Haken's.

Awesome. Just gave the debut a second listen and it's really, really damned good. Except for the death vocals.  :lol

I like the death vocals, particularly in Streams where that section is so doomy and atmospheric, and would have sounded wrong with clean vocals. But Hen says there are none on the new album because there was nothing that required them.

I like that as the reasoning, I was worried they had decided to stop doing them cos some people didn't like them

Could someone tell me why I listened to Aquarius like FOUR TIMES yesterday? I haven't gotten into a prog metal CD like that since Power of Omen's Rooms Of Anguish back in 2003. These guys are really good.

Easy question to answer Jaq...because these guys are brilliant and original prog rock/metal.Aquarius was a awesome debut album....but i have a sneeky feeling Visions will be even more epic...cant bloody wait.....................i really love this band. ;)

Just heard the samples from Visions. Wow. Sounds as good as Aquarius to me. This album apparently has none of the growls which is ok as I don't mind them really.

The teaser track has me SO excited about the album, all the snippets sound SO damn good. The production is just so great sounding, and the snippets of music sound so good even out of context. I really cannot wait for this album!!!

Hell yes! Definitely some bits I recognise from when they played some new songs live a little while back. Particularly the epic "I believe" chorus in the second sample, which I believe is from Nocturnal Conspiracy.

The website has been done-over in the style of the artwork for the new album, and is looking pretty cool.

Also, some artwork from the new album: https://www.hakenmusic.com/galeries/gallery17_en.htm

They were selling it early to ProgPower attendees, and I have a friend who bought it for me. Only thing that sucks is I have to wait till she's back in Jersey for her to then get it in the mail to me.
