For those who know/like Blind, how do you think this rework compares?

In terms of sound and flow, I think they've done an amazing job. I love the djent feel of the riffing now, and the song definitely feels a bit more mature.

On the first couple of listens, I really did miss the dark waltz sections and the lovely jazzy instrumental from the original. But we still have Blind to listen to, and I think the changes help this standalone as basically a separate song. More like a sequel than a re-recording.

I agree on everything. I would add that the 2:45-3:15 part in the new song (after the second chorus) and the new intro are the best improvements, but I slightly like more verses and chorus of Blind, and the last chorus has lost the epicness of the original. I think Blind is still a bit better and more interesting though

Is there still no confirmation on which one 'Earthlings' is a rework of? I saw some speculation on it when the news of the EP first came, that it might be Manifolds or Black Seed. I really really hope it's Black Seed, and would be rather disappointed if it turns out to be Manifolds. Don't get me wrong, Manifolds is a great instrumental track, it's just that I wouldn't want too much time of such a 'short' EP to be devoted to an instrumental.

man, I just listened to Blind and wow  :o not sure if I like it or i don't... the chorus sounds much more grand and epic, but the rest of the song is too slow and there are parts that just DON'T fit there (circus) and other that are cool, but useless (jazzy bass solo), so yep. Darkest Light team woot.

It would be amazing if Haken stayed with this sound for their next full-length studio album. I'd love some heavy shit from them, their "Train of Thought" so to speak.

I'm sure it's Black Seed, I remember some facebook comments where the band confirmed that to some fans who asked which songs were chosen from the demo

Yeah, the band also posted a link to the first review of the EP today, which more or less (without stating it directly) confirms it.

The review:

Fuck. So excited. It's less than a month away, and that seems like a long while now, but it will figuratively be here tomorrow. (Any college student will understand :P)

You're in for a treat. Start with their second album (Bilateral).

Agreed. Amazing album, great band.

Maschine I'm pretty lukewarm towards. I saw them support Haken a couple of gigs ago, and they were alright but nothing special. They were by far at their best when they were doing something a bit more unique, whereas most songs sounded like another band, like POS or Opeth.

The 'Earthlings' sample sounds really cool. The sample for 'Crystallised' doesn't really contain very much, but it was still nice.

Somewhere down the road I would really like a 'Restoration Part II', with the other three demo songs. I think they made excellent choices with the tracks on Restoration, but the other ones are still good enough for me to think that it would be a shame if they never got their return to the spotlight as well. Could be 10 years from now, I'd just be happy if it happened at all.

That would be interesting to see as well! But for now I just can't wait for this to come out... The iTunes samples are so delicious.

I'd like it to happen 10 years from now, just to see how old material updated today would compare to old material updated then.

Does anyone in Europe (ideally in the UK, but anywhere else also fine) want the Restoration vinyl but not bothered about the CD, and want to go half-and-half on cost? I want the CD but have no use for the vinyl.

Wow, quite surprised that they've released it - that's now most of the EP that people can hear!

Fun idea for a contest! I don't have the slightest clue where or what MP's cameo is though. All I know is that the band said on Facebook that it was neither vocals nor drums. Hmm...

Also, what's that thing of Mike mentioning a past drummer...? I thought it had to be with vocals, but I'm very lost now :(

I really like it.

I suppose one of my criticisms of the EP's sound in general is that Ray's kit sounds a little dirtier to my ears. Has anyone else noticed that?

I'm loving the sound of Ray's drums on the EP. That and Ross's vocals are the two areas that really standout as improved over the original demo!

over the original demo I certainly agree. Ross is phenomenal.

I'm not trashing his sound - it's still a good sound, and his drumming is excellent - but what I meant is that his tom hits give less of a note. Less pure. Agh, I know nothing about drumming, I'm having a hard time explaining what I mean here  :-\

I guess one could say darker-sounding than, say, on aquarius.

grittier maybe? I'm at a loss for words. A good descriptor will come to me eventually  :lol

The same thought crossed my mind as well, but it has to be more.

Same as with Darkest Light. I love everything they have added or reworked, but I miss the stuff that was removed.
