Let's see, memorable vocal melodies I can think of...

In Because It's There, pretty much the whole thing: "Life is a dream... a gift we receive" "Climb, find your way, scale high, don't look back" "In vaaaaaaiiiiin we carry onnnn"

"Streeeeeaaaaams of liiiiiiiiight..."

"I BET YOU DON'T REMEMBER ME I BET YOU WON'T FORGET THE ONLY WAY TO GO WHEN THERE IS NOWHERE LEFT TO ROAM"

"Tearing down the walls of eternity!"

"THE COCKROACH KING SITS ON HIS THRONE WITH A MIDAS TOUCH AND A HEART OF STONE"

and then the chorus of Celestial Elixir, which has been mentioned. Overall, I disagree highly, Haken writes fantastic vocal melodies more often than not.

If you think Haken don't have interesting vocal melodies you really need to listen to The Mountain because every single song there just have fantastic vocals the whole way through. Yeah a lot of Visions is dull in that regard, I won't disagree there. Aquarius has a lot of good vocal melodies too, but.

Although I agree that Visions have the worst vocal melodies,I absolutely love the "all this you can read... in my suicide notes" part in Deathless  :P

I quite like the vocal melodies in the second half of Shapeshifter. It always reminds me of SOAD for some reason, whereas the first bit of the song reminds me of Beyond This Life.
“I think it's really tragic when people get serious about stuff. It's such an absurdity to take anything really seriously ... I make an honest attempt not to take anything seriously: I worked that attitude out about the time I was eighteen, I mean, what does it all mean when you get right down to it, what's the story here? Being alive is so weird.”

Rumbo - from what I know of your tastes, I imagine you'll dig The Mountain more than the first two, but I might be wrong.

I agree. But I also think he won't end up loving this album the way many of us do.
Indeed, but then I find it hard to imagine many people liking this album as much as I do!

Slightly late to this response :lol

Yeah, The Mountain is definitely better than the previous album. But, also correctly observed, it just didn't grab me enough to wanting to listen to it again.
I should give it another whirl though, it wasn't bad by any means.

I'd definitely recommend giving it a few listens, especially if you thought it was fairly good, as a lot of people found it to be a real grower.

WHY IS IN MEMORIAM SO CATCHY

WHY IS COCKROACH KING SO CATCHY

Like seriously, if I ranked these based on catchiness, I would rank FBTE, IM, and CK at the top for this album, with AS close behind. This album is so good, I NEED TO BUY IT.

That's what's special about Haken in a nutshell: very proggy AND very catchy. CK is a prime example of a song that is easy to enjoy casually but also has a lot to offer if you want to dissect it.
Most bands specialize in one of the two. Some prog musicians (*cough* Steven Wilson *cough*) even seem to think that progressive music must not be catchy...

Agreed. I also agree that that's an amazing quality to have. Haken is the catchiest prog band I've listened to.

Why do you say that about Steven Wilson? I find pretty much everything I've listened to of Porcupine Tree to be highly catchy/memorable. Especially Blackest Eyes, The Sound of Muzak, and Piano Lessons.

Fourth.  Wilson's music is often jam-packed with catchy vocal melodies and choruses, so that is one bizarre comment. :lol :lol

Okay, I need to go back and listen to this again then.  I had to take a break after the whole 'Chocolate Rain' thing killed it for me.

I never got that, it sounds absolutely nothing like Chocolate Rain apart from the first 3 notes going high-low-high.

Possibly the first two notes, but defnitely not the third.

Yes. In Chocolate Rain, the third note is the same as the first, but that's not the case in Cockroach King -- it's two notes lower than the first. I can't confirm this on the spot, but it might be a different key as well.

only on odd-numbered times that he says it, on even numbered times its high-low-inbetween, with similar intervals

Yes! I realize I actually was mistaken. The third note is actually 4 notes lower than the first, not w.
