i have to admit, I was a little skeptical when I saw the track lengths. Figured the shorter ones would just be bridges in between the longer songs, not really standing well on their own. Glad that I was wrong; In Memoriam and Because It's There in particular are some of my favorite tracks and it's pretty awesome how much they were able to fit into a short song structure.

the shorter songs haven't really yet stuck with me much yet

:rollin
I honestly couldn't tell you at all what As Death Embraces sounds like yet though, The Path I remember well enough, In Memoriam it's mostly the intro, Because It's There is easily the most memorable of them all for me at this point.
I am bad at these things. I need lots of listens for whatever reason.

yeah mmk this is easily aoty for me right now.
Every song now. Just beautiful. Because It's There has really really grown on me to the point where it competes for my favorite in the album now.
Somebody is also the most depressing song this year, and it has SW's Raven to compete with, so that's impressive. I need to go cry now kthx

Discovered The Mountain a few weeks back. Instantly became my favourite prog release of 2013.

Just starting to go back through their discography. Instantly hooked. Visions is one incredible album - with Nocturnal Conspiracy a particular favourite. I've been missing out.

These Harmonies. The Mountain reminds me of a modern '70s  band. Which is good because this album is top notch, a good mix of The Flower Kings and Dream Theater.

The Mountain
Aquarius
Visions

Just the opposite for me.  However, I've only listened to The Mountain a couple of times.

The second half of Falling Back to Earth is absolutely gorgeous, shame the first half isn't as good, though it's still totally awesome. Just a bit less powerful than most of the album, and a bit too wanky.
In Memoriam is definitely the black sheep of the bunch here for me, it feels like it's on the wrong album. It's very much a Visions-esque song. Not bad by any means but not amazing like every other song on here.

I agree with "In Memoriam" sounding a lot like a Visions-song. I wouldn't call it a black sheep though, the album doesn't have any IMO.

I love 7:15 - 8:11 of Somebody.  It's very Hans Zimmer (Batman or Inception) inspired.   :hefdaddy

totally is, best part of the song for me and it's great all the way through. So many chills from that bit though.
so much so that I went and figured out the main chords for the chorus melody xD

Still same.
Have a fair few albums I'll be picking up near the end of the year that stand a chance of competing for that title though.

I'm not much into ranking too specifically, but The Mountain is probably in my top 5 of this year somewhere. :tup It surprised me too, because I wasn't all that big on Haken's previous two albums.

Has it been mentioned that the vocal melody at the beginning of Cockroach King sounds just like Chocolate Rain ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwTZ2xpQwpA

Anyway, going through my second listen now.  Some really solid stuff here, probably in my top 5 for the year.  The top album of the year is still Alter Bridge's Fortress by a mile though.
