I think this DT album could touch The Mountain. Shoot me.

DT12 > The Mountain.

Come at me.

I beg to differ! After listening to DT12 only four times and The Mountain over 50 times, I would say The Mountain is definitely the superior album. DT12 sure brings a lot of sound and fury, and maybe it just hasn't clicked for me yet, but it seems to lack The Mountain's a)cohesion, b) ambition, c) variety and d) lyrical depth.

It's all a matter of taste and opinion, I guess, but here's an equation I hope few will disagree with:
The Mountain + DT12 = Happy Prog Fans

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm actually liking DT12 quite a lot. Going in for my fifth listen now!

from my perspective, thinking that DT's newest album (which is full of some good stuff but also some of the most uninspired by-the-numbers songwriting I've ever heard) is better than Haken's newest release (which is so inspired, energetic, and shows the band on the top of their game) is mind-boggling.

but y'know, opinions.

Yeah, it's funny, I think DT12 is their most radular album yet, only (for now) behind Images & Words.

Haken just don't do it for me really.

I'm not a particularly big fan of Haken either, though I very much liked what I've heard off of The Mountain. I definitely prefer DT12 over it too, though I think the upcoming Fates Warning album is going to top both albums. :lol :tup

Oh god, I'm having such hard time comparing The Mountain and DT12, picking a favorite is like picking a favorite child. I love them both so much. Gonna be hard ranking 2013 albums this year. Already had so many stellar releases and we still have Fates Warning and Ayreon to look forward too.

Funny, I don't feel the need in comparing The Mountain with DT like many of you do. Though I can say now with confidence that The Mountain sounds like Haken and DT sounds like DT and i'm very happy with that. Both bands surprised me in a good way.

Exactly. Personally though, I do prefer The Mountain, but just because it's more suited to my tastes. Both are great!

DT12 is fine, not near the top of the DT albums but it's fine. But The Mountain is so far above DT12 I had to climb staircases for three days just to get to it.

After The Mountain, comparing Haken to DT doesn't make sense to me anymore. On Aquarius and especially on Visions, comparisons to DT were easy. The Mountain, however, is different. Take Preidolia as an example, a 11 minute song that doesn't have any clear guitar or keyboard solos. Where do you even start to compare it to a DT song?

I don't feel comfortable expressing my opinion too loudly after only two listens to DT12, but I can say one thing with certainty: The Mountain is crazier and more eccentric than DT12, but still manages to be more cohesive and accessible. DT12 sometimes seems to act as if it's more complex than it really is.

Yep, at the Borderline.

It would definitely be fun joining in on that show! (Well, I'd think so :p ) I'll have to look into the possibilities of making it happen though. It seems I have a day off on the Monday, so the time shouldn't really be an issue. Getting to London and back is going to be though.

After 2 1/2 listens on DT12 I would say The Mountain has higher moments but as an overall I like DT12 better. All the quirkiness in TM makes it lose consistency while DT12 is the other way around, not so many great moments but more enjoyable to listen throughout. Plus, DTs ballads are more touching.

For me it's the other way around. DT's ballads are often boringly predictable and lately very cheesy.

Yeah their ballads hasn't interested me since the days of Disappear and Vacant.

My copy unfortunately didn't arrive yet. :( I won't be able to accurately rank TM against DT12 since I'm only familiar with the former as of yet. I'm sure it will be close though. I can already tell DT12 blew my expectations out of the water, and I felt that MAYBE TM would actually beat DT12 for album of the year, but I really don't know anymore. :lol

While I prefer TM, I'm not sure that pitting them against each other makes much sense. TM is a great example of "PROGRESSIVE metal" while DT12 is more of a "progressive METAL" record. Your opinion will depend more on your genre preference than on the quality of the albums.

Anyway:

Yes. There's only one version up there last I looked (I preordered as soon as it was up, before it even had artwork with it)
