I love Lapochka, but I seem to be one of the few. The drumming in that track is absolutely insane, and the chorus is great too.

I'm slowly warming up to this, though I still have to resist the urge to hit next when In Absentia comes up.  Empty Vessels is probably my favorite so far, but this one is gonna require a lot of listens...

Anyone else finding the sound of the album to be, well, really shitty?

Track-by-track interview. Turns out it's a concept album about a kid with a difficult home life. Who knew? https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7hjsPwbMAPk

Okay, so, at first, I thought "The Whip Hand" was a terrible track and an awful opener for the album.

Now?  I can't get enough of it.  Those synths are so damn awesome.

I hope the rest of the album follows those footsteps.

Agreed. Dat synth in the chorus gives me hardcore chills.

I would like to formally apologize to Octahedron for talking about how bad it was before really giving it a chance. After listening to it extensively over the past few months due to not really being that into Noctourniquet, I can honestly say that it's grown on me, a lot.

It's funny that you were so psyched for Notourniquet and I wasn't; yet I really enjoy it, and you don't.

Me and Mars Volta albums are really weird. It takes a really long time for them to reach a point where I can tell if I really like them or not, and my initial opinion usually changes. The only exception being De-Loused (I've loved that album from the get go). I really loved Amputechture and Frances the Mute on first listen, but now I really don't listen to them all to often, and the exact opposite can be said for Bedlam and Octahedron. I really didn't like them except for a song or two, and now I would rank them 1 and 3 respectively, and they make up a majority of my Volta listening. I'm sure as the months go by though, my opinion on Noctourniquet will change as I listen to it more just like all of their other records.

Yea, Mars Volta albums take some time to appreciate.

I can say, though, that the first 4 albums usually had enough raw energy and power on the outside to bring me back every time, so I always got excited about it. Then over time, the beauty and genius of the music would reveal itself.

Since Octehedron, there is no skin-deep energy and the newer albums need more time to appreciate; the band is not barraging you with riffs and soaring vocals. And now with the electronic element, I have had to accept this new direction the band is going in. Had I not heard Octehedron before Noctouriquet, I may have been disappointed when the new album came out.

I think the reason that Noctourniquet hasn't quite clicked with me yet, is becasue it came out right when Octahedron had just started hitting on all cylinders for me, and I've just been kicking myself for writing it off before even giving it a chance. So instead of listening to the new record, I've been spinning Octahedron instead. I guess I'm just an album behind everybody else, and I'm completely fine with that.

The riff in Molochwalker is too fucking good, and the solo sounds like something that should have been on Goliath. Overall this song is what is keeping me interested in Noctourniquet.

I would have to put it at number one for me. It just does something for me that no other song on the record does.

Still thrashing both Bedlam (which I bought in February) and Noctourniquet (which I bought when it came out, ish).

I've found that generally, once they reach a point, I rarely listen to TMV albums anymore, in comparison to other favourite bands of mine. On the other hand, their albums' honeymoon periods tend to last longer than most other bands.

I find the exact opposite. I don't listen to Volta albums very much in the beginning, but afterwards I find myself listening to them far more often than any other band. Take Octahedron for example: I barely listened to it before 2012, and in the past 6 months I've got about 250 plays from it.

Depends on the album.

I don't spin Noct, Octa or Bedlam much, but Frances and DeLoused get regular listens.  Frances especially.

I tend to listen to them all evenly. Even Amputechture gets some plays, although it's mostly just Day of the Baphomets.

I get into periods where all I want to do is listen to The Mars Volta.  I think one of those periods is starting now.  Playing Nocturniquet and its very enjoyable so far.

EDIT: I forgot how groovy and awesome Bedlam can be.

I've always found Bedlam to be a really fun listen - I like to listen to it playing sport, excercising, driving and even cleaning the house. By contrast, I find it quite...tedious (but not because its bad) to sit down and listen to.
I punch those numbers into my calculator and they make a happy face.

Neither of those are very good starting points at all. ;) I started with Amputechture and it worked great for me, though the best starting point might be Deloused..

Deloused is their best so start with that.

So after a few months I've decided that Nocturniquet is their second-best album.  Its an especially special album and I love it to death.

Pretty sure they're just on hiatus for a while. Cedric's working on his solo record, and Omar's got his new band Bosnian Rainbows, but I'm pretty sure that they're gonna resume making music at some point.

Speaking of Ceddy, what's the latest on his solo album? I haven't heard anything for absolutely AGES! Nothing new on wiki and his Twitter account is both infuriating and useless. I'm really excited about the prospect of a Cedric solo album but it seems like he's totally forgotten about it. :lol

How is Octahedron considered one of their weaker albums? It's so beautiful!
