I really liked the new song.  Plus it makes me confident that they aren't just doing a Volta-by-numbers thing.  I'm looking forward to it.

I agree!  Omar has so much solo stuff that sounds similar to Volta material, so I'm really interested is this new direction.  If it turns out to be not-so-good, there's always more Omar albums to check out!

The new song is pretty interesting. It's not really that amazing but it's at least comforting to know the album should be something unique.

The thing that I'm most looking forward to is the drum tracks. Deantoni is such a genius, and while on first listen I didn't really get what was going on by the sixth or seventh listen my mind was blown. I can't wait to see what's in store.

Been listening to all Mars Volta albums lately. Started with De Loused and Frances, now Octahedron and Bedlam. (Still having difficulties with Ampu, but I'll manage that as well soon, I reckon)

Amputecture is the hardest album to get through for me. Even the fact that it has their best song (Day of the Baphomets) in my opinion. There's just too much that doesn't really appeal to me.

Also, I think Teflon might be rivaling Day of the Baphomets as my favorite Volta song. It's just so damn good.

I found used copies of De-Loused In The Comatorium and Amputechture on Thursday. Holy shit, De-Loused is awesome. I feel like my ears just got their asses kicked.

And now I've gotten through Amputechture, and I must agree with PuffyPat on this. While De-Loused was amazing, this is... eh. A lot of the songs are either very boring or very hard to get into. This may be my least favorite Volta album now that I've heard. it. But lord, "Day Of the Baphomets" kicks serious ass. I've had it stuck in my head for days.

All I need to hear now is The Bedlam In Goliath and Noctourniquet.

Hoping to hear some more samples from Noctourniquet soon. The first single didn't impress me at all but I'm willing to bet it's the worst song on the album.

Yeah, Amputechture is probably the worst Volta album. A couple of the songs are winners - Tetragrammation, Meccamputechture, Asilos Magdalena, Day of the Baphomets - but there's a considerable amount of filler as well. Bedlam, however? It may be a bit more difficult to get into than De-loused or Frances, but there's some incredible material there as well.

Man, Amputechture is awesome, you guys are crazy.  It has Tetragrammatron, Vermicide, Viscera Eyes, Day of the Baphomets... hell, the whole middle part of the album is awesome.  The bookends are kinda meh, but the rest is gold, gold Jerry, gold!

Bedlam and Octahedron (to a lesser extent) feel more fillery to me, but what do I know, Frances and Amputechture are my favorite albums. :)

Well, my biggest "problem" with Amputechture is its length. But that's my problem with most TMV albums actually. I'll try again today. Normally you have a great taste in music The King in Crimson, so I'll trust you on this one as well.

I think the big reason that it's hard for me to get through this album is the fact that the first track is just meh. I had been used to getting my ass kicked by the first track that I was just a bit let down when I first listened to it, and the fact that it really slows down in the middle with Asilos Magdalena didn't help too much either. Plus I was never really into Tetragrammatron like everyone else seems to be.

Might as well rank this shit.

1. Day of the Baphomets
2. Visera Eyes
3. Vermicide
4. Meccamputechture
5. Tetragrammatron
6. Asilos Magdalena
7. Vicarious Atonement
8. El Ciervo Vulnerado

Don't fret, after a few listens I still don't like Tetragrammatron. That song is waaaay longer than it needs to be, and none of it is really all that memorable. And El Ciervo Vulnerado is such a terrible closer after Day Of the Baphomets. But the middle of the album is alright. But after what I'd heard from the band beforehand, it's a massive let down.

Though I'm a bit weird, I only like the first half of Octahedron, and everyone seems to love the second half of it way more than the first.

Say what you want about Tetragrammation, but the riff from 0:00 to 1:10 is nothing short of brutal. One of my favorite moments on the album.

Thanks.  :tup

If it makes any difference, try skipping either the first or the last track (or both).  Even though I love the album, I usually skip those two.  Just not up to par with the rest of the songs.

My ranking:
Day of the Baphomets
Viscera Eyes
Tetragrammatron
Vermicide
Asilos Magdalena
Meccamputechture
Vicarious Atonement
El Ciervo Vulnerado

I can see what you mean with the first half thing (Teflon would be my favorite Volta song if Day of the Baphomets wasn't so damn good), but I feel like it drags a little between Teflon and Cotopaxi.

It took a while for With Twilight As My Guide to grow on me. I hated it at first. I like it now, though I still think it's a bit too long. Halo Of Nembutals, though, I always loved. It's one of those ticks where, if I listen to Teflon, I have to listen to Halo Of Nembutals because I love those two together so much.

Goliath's name fits the song perfectly. I don't know why, but that main riff ("never heard a man speak") is just...... FUCKING GOLIATH!  :metal :metal :metal :metal

5. Eunuch Provocateur
6. Day of the Baphomets

What a great idea on a Friday afternoon at work:
1. Cicatriz ESP
2. Goliath
3. Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt
4. Luciforms
5. Inertiatic ESP
6. Drunkship of Lanterns
7. L'Via L'Viaquez
8. Miranda et al (come at me)
9. Cotopaxi
10. Day of the Baphomets

That's a pretty brilliant list of tracks...
