Surrounded versus Wait For Sleep
« on: October 04, 2010, 06:30:14 PM »
From rob's thread on a song everyone likes, these are/were the two finalists (there hasn't been a verdict as I type this).  I haven't seen much hate for Surrounded, and no hate at all for WFS, but which do you prefer?

As good as Surrounded is, I've gotta go with WFS.  It's just....better.  I dunno. :-\

Wait for Sleep by quite a margin.

I really adore Surrounded, top 50 DT song for sure, but Wait for Sleep is amazing.

Voted Equal... and apparently, I'm the first one. They're both pretty good in their own way, and comparing them would be a bit foolish considering their differences outweigh their similarities.

me no likey Surrounded
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Both are excellent.  I guess Wait for Sleep, but it's right down the line.

Interesting that these are the two songs that received the least hate.  I would never have guessed.

Surrounded. Both the CIM version with the outstanding solo and the studio version.
Wait for Sleep is still pretty good though. Great intro to one of the best DT songs imo.

Both are incredibly beautiful songs. I prefer Surrounded though.

I don't like very much the CiM version. One of the things I like about this song is its simplicity and catchiness, and the extended solos thing detracted a bit from that IMO. Also, I don't like JLB's vocals there at all lol

Surrounded is my favourite DT song, and among one of my favourite songs in general.  So yeah lol

I love WFS too though, great song.

Well, this turned out to be a landslide.

I think one of the reasons Surrounded is ranked higher is just because it's longer, whereas WFS is an intro to LtL, more or less.  I've noticed that the longer songs generally rank higher than the shorter ones among the fans.

I feel that WFS does it's job in it's placement of the album perfectly, though.

It's a close call, but I'll go with Surrounded. The "problem" with WFS is that it's too fast on the studio version. If it was played more slowly like in the Live in Tokyo version, I'd definitely rank it higher.

Even though it seems tremendously lopsided, based on the comments it doesn't seem like Surrounded wins at as large a margin as the poll shows.

Surrounded was the first DT song I ever heard and quite possibly my favorite. It's been 4 years and I still don't know the lyrics by heart yet though.... There's nothing wrong with Wait For Sleep but Surrounded wins by a million miles.

Wait for Sleep is a top 5 Dream Theater song for me, so I voted for it without hesitation. I'm surprised to see Surrounded doing so much better than it.

WFS is a great song, don't get me wrong, but Surrounded's mood changes beautifully through the song. Surrounded is a journey, WFS is a destination.
