Composing / Writing problem.
« on: September 27, 2010, 03:51:32 PM »
So I have this song I'm working on and I can't make it flow, this 3 little sections I have just sound weird
when I put them together.
Any tips or help on how to make a song flow are welcome.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

To be honest what might not sound like it flows under close scrutiny from you might flow perfectly well to a casual listener. A lot of Beatles songs have awkward transitions than don't really work all that well but everybody seems to love those. Are these sections in the same tempo roughly, or key?

Yes they're in the same tempo and key, the problem is after the solo I did, the next section just sound wrong. Maybe is just me.
And I have done other songs but this is the first time something like this happens  :sadpanda:.

Hmm, I guess then the best thing to do is just to put it there and hope people don't notice, which I doubt they would. If they're in the same key and tempo then it shouldn't be tooo jarring surely? It might just be you being overly critical because it's your own work.

When something like that happens to me, I try to come up with a different section that sounds right to my ears. If I really like the section that gets replaced because it didn't fit, I construct a new song around it.

I would certainly not stick to it if I felt it does not flow. No matter what the casual listener says, if I myself do not think it works, I'll never be satisfied with the outcome and eventually the song will end up not getting recorded / kicked out of the live set.

I had the same problem with a song that I'm currently finishing. I had to come up with about 15 different approaches until I was satisfied, but that way I made some really cool stuff that I can use in the future  :lol

But that's just the way I work. You'll have to find out what works best for you. Good luck  :metal

If you have an idea that's really good, but doesn't fit with the rest of the song, shelve it. If it almost fits, try to modify it to fit better or maybe save it for later in the song.

How about a 2 bar transition from 1 section to the next?

I did this after the solo, sounds better now, but I still find it a little awkward.

I think I'm going to do this.

Good luck  :metal
