Take away my painnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Well, to be accurate, the vowel section of the word is what is held.
Add a "uh" to the end of that, and it's the James Hetfield way to say it.

Adding uh to the end of a word is the best thing ever.

The JLB way is to weirdly pronounce things, as in "the crowed applauds".

What disqualifies TBOT for me is the lyrics. Quite a few cringe moments.

Take Away My Pain has a much more mellow flavor and all around seriousness to its lyrics. The Best of Times has an overbearing epic side to it and the lyrics come off as cheesy sometimes. Then again, I love the reggae-ish sound that I hear in the back of TAMP.

But that's just me.

Yeah, for me it's just the "thank you for....MY LIFE"

I mean yeah he gave birth to him...big deal!

Anyway I really don't want to start a debate on this but I jsut think that it sound weird in the sound when I hear it...I understand were Mike is coming from though.

Take Away My Pain. Both demo and album. That's not to say I don't like TBOT though. I just feel TAMP is a stronger song.

The demo version of Take Away My Pain. Also, TAMP's lyrics are better imo.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

I really like them both, but TBOT is slightly better.

wow its at 50/50
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

TBOT solo shits on TAMP demo or not.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Side point, the deaths of MP's parents were lauded with huge epics, while the death of JP's father (Another Day, TAMP) got much less than epic treatment.

Lyrically, "Take Away My Pain" wins by 298,472 miles, but musically, it is pretty close.

Yeah, for me it's just the "thank you for....MY LIFE"
I mean yeah he gave birth to him...big deal!

For me there's three moments:

- "But then came the call, our lives changed forever more"
- "thank you for....MY LIFE"
- "My heart is bleeding bad, but I'll be ok"

- "My heart is bleeding bad, but I'll be ok"

I have to admit that the grammar nazi inside of me cringes every time I hear that line. :p :lol It should be, "My heart is bleeding badly..."  I get that sometimes a grammatical error can be made to make a vocal melody sound more natural and better*, but that is not one.  The line sounds awkward as is, so I think he could written a better line that would have sounded better, while still conveying the same amount of emotion.

*A good example of a grammatical mistake that makes the vocal melody sound better is in Death Cab for Cutie's "Tiny Vessels."  The line, "She is beautiful, but she don't mean a thing to me," sounds perfect from a melodic standpoint.  It correctly being, "...but she doesn't mean a thing to me," would have made the line sound too clunky, like they jammed in one too many syllables or something.

Hmm, tough call. The solo in TBOT slightly gives it the edge for me.

Haven't voted 'cos I can't split 'em. Love both songs. I find TAMP the "sadder" song, but I like the generally upbeat nature of much of TBOT, anfd the outro solo, as others have said, is beautiful.

"My heart is bleeding bad" is probably the most embarrassing and worst lyric DT has ever written in my opinion, worse than anything of SC. And while I respect what it means to MP, TBOT just feels kind of bloated to me. I'll go with Take Away My Pain, though I'm not a huge fan of that either.

TBOT, it's one of their better mellow songs, but TAMP is one of those songs that I do not listen to really often, but when I do, it's really a good song

Take Away My Pain, easily. For me it's better in every way - music, lyrics, melodies, etc. I find TBOT pretty bland and uninspired sounding. But that's just me.

I just got my hands on FII demos (not done listening) and while TAMP is better (I still prefer TBOT), what really drew my attention is You or Me. That song really stands out for me, and is so much different than anything else form DT.
