Here's a new guitar technique
« on: September 27, 2010, 01:43:10 PM »
Well, kinda.

YouTube      - Broadcast Yourself.

Wim calls it pick picking. It's really not that new to play polyphonic with monophonic input (pick instead of fingers). There are tons and tons of violin pieces written that way for example. And Nuno Bettencourt's Midnight Express comes to mind. It's just that it really does sound refreshing the way he does it. Three lines, with one voice.

I really enjoyed that tune I must say, but I don't see how this is really new in any way. Interweaving two or three melody lines into a single one has been done time and time again.

I think the point is that it's done with a pick rather than fingers, like OP said.

That was incredible, I can't even begin to comprehend how I'd do that. The ending was great too.

I know, but at least to me a variation on an existing technique doesn't immediately constitute a new one.

As I pointed out in my own post, indeed it's actually not new at all. It's just that, because of the limitations you create when you try to play multiple lines with a pick, you get this looper effect. I was immediately thinking about the first stage of Ninja Gaiden (NES), by the way.

For those who like to play it themselves, I transcribed his original version.
