Was watching "Gandhi" yesterday ...
« on: September 17, 2010, 01:25:26 PM »
and it came to the Massacre of Amritsar. Holy cow, I can only say. In case you didn't know, during the time of India trying to gain independence, the British Indian Army set an example to Indians by showing up at a religious family festival (all unarmed, with women and children), blocking the exit to the place with a semicircle of soldiers, and then proceeded to shoot everybody until the ammunition ran out.

My point? Not sure really. Other than maybe that almost no European country can claim any high moral ground for the deeds they committed in the 20th century. Not belittling what Germany did, but it seems many European countries hide themselves behind the atrocities of Nazi Germany, trying to come off clean that way.

As a jew, I'm very happy that Hitler got the attention and special treatement by history that he did. However, objectively speaking there is constantly horrible things going on. Whether it be what you speak of, or Mao and is deeds, or the japanese experimenting on their own people in horrible ways, or the african wars (any of them) or the middle eastern fighting, or the irish civil wars......the problem is lots of those countries are the ones who write the history books and see no reason to include a lot of the horrible things they did.

But seriously, yeah.  Unfortunately, there is no limit to the barbarism human beings can inflict on one another.  :(

I so would have been banned for that. Luckily it didn't even enter my mind to say it, I guess I'm getting better.

I don't think any country can claim high moral ground.  We all have skeletons in the closet.

BTW, as awesome Gandhi was, he also had a few screws loose:

Quote
"Hitler," Gandhi said, "killed five million Jews. It is the greatest crime of our time. But the Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher’s knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs... It would have aroused the world and the people of Germany... As it is they succumbed anyway in their millions."

I can see his point, though that is an odd way of putting it.

There was no hiding so I think that's disingenuous or misinformed to say that. People were held accountable by Parliament. I doubt that would have happened in the German Empire let alone the third reich.

Well, that Andy post closes the thread, since that's (I believe) everyone was waiting for anyway.
