Progressive Nation and the "Classic Album" live thing done/hiatus?
« on: September 11, 2010, 06:13:29 PM »
You have to wonder since Mike was so involved in both of these things the band did, if they'll be doing them again if he never comes back.

Hopefully not.

I mean, they aren't necessarily bad ideas, but they've been done.  Since both were MP's things, I see no reason for them to continue now.

The classic album thing I really like, so personally would love them to return to it. Prog Nation was entirely Mike's thing, so I don't think it'd make sense to carry that on.

For all we know, Prog Nation could've been one of Mike's ways of shaking things up a little for the band in recent years. His growing boredom with the way things were probably gave him such an idea, and perhaps, the chance to play with bands he likes on the same stage and get to meet new people/musicians through the process.

Something tells me the next tour is going to be "An evening with...". It makes sense...new drummer, new DT era, new album...lots of things coming around.

It's not like Mike owns Prog Nation; I'm sure Petrucci could set it up still. Hell, Mike would probably even help John with any of the information he needs to get it going.

I sure hope PN doesn't make a return.

I'd rather see DT play proper headline shows not anticlimatic 90 minute sets.

I dug Prog Nation...it introduced to me to some really cool bands.
But, I would always prefer to have a full set from Dream Theater.

This... PN09 actually introduced me to Queensryche.

PN had its cool moments, but it's the name more than anything else. It's actually just a small package tour. There been two of these already, so I don't see 'em coming back soon.

Didn't it fail commercially last year anyway?

I wouldn't say it failed commercially, but either way most people were there just to see DT.

PN could continue as it really was an MP endeavor. However, given that DT most likely wouldn't be on the lineup, MP would need a strong set of bands for anyone to show up.

The best of both worlds would to have a Progressive Nation tour in 2011, with Transatlantic on the bill.

OK, really, I just want to see Transatlantic and Dream Theater at the same show.

Prog Nation was cool, and it did introduce me to a few bands, but it's time for the full DT experience.

As much as I enjoy Progressive Nation, I've seen it twice now and I'm more than ready to see DT go back to one opening band TOPS (read: hopefully evening with) and play a longer set.

Why would he?  It was always MP's pet project, and according to him, DT barely broke even on it.  Why would Petrucci and everyone else in the band WANT to continue it?  They would make more money doing a solo tour, plus that's what their fans would rather have anyway.

Exactly. Progressive Nation was an amazing idea, but I'd trade it anytime for a three hour long Dream Theater show.

Everybody here seems to equate PN with Dream Theater. There can easily be a PN run by MP, without DT on the bill.

This is what I'm saying. He could finally try to get Beardfish and other bands. Actually, I'd enjoy it if he could get a Swedish PN bill together, with Beardfish, Agents Of Mercy, Karmakanic, and Pain Of Salvation.

Or really, anything would be pretty sweet. I wouldn't mind seeing Transatlantic on the bill, and doing a purely symphonic/classic prog PN tour put together, maybe Neal could have a set, Roine could have a set with Agents Of Mercy, Daniel with Pain Of Salvation, and Pete with Marillion.

I'm not sure that MP could still put one together without DT's star power to anchor it.  I mean, hopefully he could, if that is an avenue he wanted to pursue, but I have my doubts.

Wasn't the whole idea to use DT's popularity to get their fans into new music anyways? If MP were to try and do it himself whatever band he does it in isn't going to pull in near as many people.

Without a band like Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree at the top of the bill it would not work.

Pretty much.

I would love to see a full DT show.  The 90 minutes I got to see them were magical, but hopefully they'll come back to NC (or GA?) with a full three hours or one opening band.
