Did Dominici sing Don't Look Past Me?
« on: June 01, 2009, 02:48:23 PM »
I have a  bootleg called "Uncovered," and I'm not sure how legal this thing is in terms of discussion, but there's a song on it called Past (Into the Sun) and it's Don't Look Past Me but with someone other than Labrie on vocals. And he actually sounds....really good for the most part. My point is: if it's Dominici, if they ever did something on stage with him again, I think it should be this song. I can't emphasize this enough, I think this sounds really good...on another note, thank god they redid this song at a later point, because it certainly sounds better redone (they changed certain parts) and with Labrie's uncontrolled exuberance. However, this mystical creature singing is very restrained and trained, and I think the two of them would sound great live

Anyone else have this weird gem? Fucking SWEET

It is John Hendricks, I looked it up on the Auditions bootleg.
It's a cool version indeed, and he's a good singer, but nothing special IMO, and a bit wobbly most of the times.

It's one of John Hendrick's vocalist audition demos. It can be heard officially on the Images and Words Demos from YtseJamRecords.

Yeah, there is definitely a John Hendricks version out there (it is on the Images & Words demo).  I'm not sure what exactly you have.  The Uncovered bootleg does not have Don't Look Past Me on it.  The version you have must have a track (or tracks) added by someone as bonus content.  I'm not sure of the timing on that one, but I am almost positive it was written after Charlie (or at least not demoed until after he left) and that he never sung it.  He kept a rahter comprehensive collection of the demos he recorded with DT, and that song does not appear on there.  Of course, to be sure, you could always post at Charlie's forum and ask him.  But I'm guessing what you are hearing is the Hendricks demo.

It's listed as being from 1987, so it might be with Charlie. I can't listen to it right now, but sometime tonight I'll listen and see if it's with Charlie or if it's with John. Either way the song was never played live, so it would be a demo.

As for the Uncovered bootleg, I think it was originally released with all these bonus tracks from various demos, these tracks were most likely then removed by someone who wanted to share it electronically on a site like DIME or elsewhere. Naturally this would be the most well circulated version, but I'd be willing to bet the version with the bonus tracks is the original version.

Oh, interesting.  I did not know that bit of history with that bootleg.

Well, I don't know that as a fact, but that would be typical with a LOT of the older bootlegs. Back in the mid 90's, and before, selling bootlegs was a normal operation. Now, most were based around live shows of course, but regularly the bootleggers would get ahold of, and add on tracks from demos and other such things to up the value of the shows they would release. Of course in this age many such tracks are not okay'd to be shared by a lot of bands and/or sites, so often they get removed and a diluted version gets shared.

His voice doesn't sound 100% similar but you can tell they're both of a similar type of singer--to say that they aren't at all similar is either an exaggeration or misguided. Both are extremely pronounced, they seem to favor perfect annunciation over flow, especially as they go higher in their registers.

Thanks guys. The bootleg's tracklisting (the one I have):

Medley (Funeral For a Friend, Love Lies Bleeding)
Perfect Strangers
Red Hill Mining Town
Zep Medley
Tears (an extremely bad version of it compared with Acoustic Dreams)
Damage Inc
Happiness is a Warm Gun
Easter (who the hell is singing this?)
Winter
In the Dead of Night
Yes Medley (Machine Messiah/Heart on the Sunrise/Close to the Edge/Siberian Khatru/Starship Trooper) feat. Steve Howe
The Big Medley (the one on ACOS)
Space Dye-Vest demo sung by KM
Carry That Weight
The Night
Past (Into the Sun)--the song in question
Mission Impossible
To Live Forever
Indulge in Reverie
A Late Summer S Rain/Schizophrenia

It's 2.1 hours long and is really incredibly massive...

Yeah, according to that list it is.

But I compared it to the actual John Hendricks demo, and it is the same.
So unless MP is wrong with the Official Bootlegs, there's no way that could be Charlie.

As I would suspect, the bootleg info is wrong and it is indeed John's version of Don't Look Past Me. It's a generated and crappier version of what is on the Images and Words Demos.

Slightly off-topic, but I finally tracked John Hendricks down and interviewed him a few months ago for the updated version of the book! He's now a music teacher in California.

In fact here's a clip of him singing recently - he's the guy in the cap!

I don't think it was even written in '87, if I'm not mistaken, Nick.  Again, it's not listed as being demoed prior to the I&W demos, and it doesn't appear on the Charlie tapes.  Are you aware of any earlier work on it that I am not?

EDIT:  That's awesome, Rich!  You're really making me want this edition.   :D

Awesome tracking down John Hendricks like that! Last November the louisville orchestra did a Led Zep tribute with a band and the guitarist name was Chris Cintron ;)

I believe it was written in '90, although I'm not 100% sure.

Disc 2, Track 3
Kevin Moore Solo - Demo 1995

1995?  That doesn't seem right...
I had always assumed that this track was just an early vocal demo of the song.

Disc 2, Track 7
John Petrucci - Demo 1994

Hmm... I thought this was much older than that.  Isn't this from the Instru Mental 2 bootleg recorded in the late 80's?

Oh.... no, its them.  Charlie just does a kickass job with it.  I've always said that that particular cover is my all time favorite Charlie Dominici vocal performance.

Easter (who the hell is singing this?)

If this is the version from the live covers they performed at a fan club concert at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club circa 1995 then that is Steve Hogarth.
